Losing skills?

My DD is 10 months and I've noticed that she seems to have lost a couple of skills. For example, she mastered waving a few months ago but doesn't do it anymore, even when I try to encourage it. It's like she's forgotten how. She does point at things, including things she sees and wants. She also recently started babbling. We had a couple of days of very pronounced practice in that, but she seems to have given up on it already!

Is this sort of thing normal at her age? I guess maybe the key is whether she picks it up again soon? Her cousin has autism so I'm definitely watching out for potential signs of that.

Sometimes its like they learn something then file it away to focus on something else, you may not notice right now but their brain is probably working overtime on a new skill about to present itself!

My DD rolled for a bit, then stopped for 2 weeks and started doing it again. A friend of a friend had a baby that rolled once then never did it again, but hit all other milestones early/ on time! I think sometimes they're bored of it and move onto the next thing. Please don't worry!

I think it's more likely she's just had a waving phase and then moved on to something else. That's totally normal! Losing skills I think would be more like talking first and then no longer talking at all.

I agree. I always thought that losing skills was when they started talking then stopped too.

She's working on something new.

Babies develop at a phenomenal speed and they can't do it all at once.

They work on something and then file it away while they work on something else. Their sleep is so important because that's when the brain files all the info and knits it all together.

Then they have growth spurts in there too so cognitively they appear to slow down but physically they change almost overnight.

It's just all a process and takes time to all come together.x

Thank you all! That makes total sense!

Pointing is a really positive sign, and she’s very early too. Mine didn’t point until about 13/14 months (I remember stressing a bit about it!) It is worrying but she sounds fine Smile
