Crying a lot/ intense behaviour / problems on school run

My five year old is very emotional. She's the very youngest in her year 1 class so won't be six for a few mo this yet and we are already mindful that maturity wise she may be behind some of her cohort.

We've had a few incidences where she has burst into tears over very minor thing.on the school run, for eg not being allowed to run after a friend to catch up with them (due to roads, me with buggy etc) and also a friend not behaving the way she liked (but I didn't really observe anything wrong if that makes sense). She's also really keen on another little girl as her best friend, and I understand in school they are very pally but outside of school it's quite different (other little girl not bothered about walking together and holding hands for eg, and doesn't ever wait to walk my DD even though my DD is always wanting to chat to catch up with her) I'm concerned it's got a bit intense and wondered if I should be doing anything to help DD manage her emotions better.

We're getting into a situation where walking to and from school is a problem due to the tears, wanting to always walk with the other little girl etc and I can't think what to do other than to pick her up in the car so we avoid the walk. But we live minutes from the school so this seems ridiculous.

Any thoughts and advice on how to help her manage her emotions and handle the friendship not being what she wants?

sorry for all the typos, but just to add there is no other way to walk to and from school, so we can't take another route either
