First steps to walking properly..

I should really remember and know this being a Mum of 4 but I am having a mild panic! My 4th born was 1 in early March. He crawled at 6m and cruised around from around 8-9m. He took his first steps around 5 weeks ago but is still really unsteady and tends to fall down easily , prefers to crawl and buckles when I stand him at times to walk. I’m concerned he’s sore in some way or if there could be another reason he is reluctant to walk. He will take steps occasionally but picks crawling first. Looking back at old videos of his siblings once their first steps were taken, they were walking independently in days if not a week or two after. Any similar stories?

My 13 month old is the same. It was my understanding that 14 months is the average but the range goes all the way to 18 months old for walking. Sometimes even later. I think some take just a little longer to build strength and not fall over so much and crawling is a quicker way for them to get around at the time being.
my ds also has teeny feet (size 2.5) so suspect that doesn’t help his balance! He goes to nursery and the staff there have no concerns and in fact have said he’s well on track if not one of the earlier ones for milestones.

Is he trying to keep up with his siblings and as such picking the faster method that he is confident with?

My 13 month old is exactly the same. He took his first steps ages ago but still chooses crawling every time and has to be prompted to walk!

My competent crawler took a while to master walking - mainly because crawling was much faster! It was only when he wanted to carry stuff he walked.

Both of mine have taken time after their first steps to get walking.
My eldest took his first steps the day before he turned 1 but wasn’t walking properly until 14 months. He was very fast crawling and could pull himself tip so I don’t think he felt the need to be walking.

My youngest has just started walking at 14 months but didn’t take her first steps until about 3 weeks ago. She was also a very fast crawler. She is also a very good climber so I think she could do most stuff without walking.

Dd1 was a confident walker within days. Dd2 took months- she was a later walker and a bum shuffler and I wonder if that impacted at all.

My boy took his first steps at 11 months but didn’t walk again till a week after his first birthday. Within a week he was walking everywhere.

Could he be getting knocked over by the older DC, if all young? Or as previous poster said trying to keep up with them. Once better weather is here he'll want to be running about outside at ever opportunity 😀
