Hitting

Absolutely at my wits end with this. I have a 2.5 year old who is very high energy, and boisterous. He is fun, very loving and I love him so much.

He also hits and bites me multiple times a day, and I am now at my wits end about it, to the point that it's making me cry multiple times a day.

He went through a biting stage at nursery but they've said now he's calmed down loads and is much more gentle there, he has lots of friends. He hits and bites his dad but nowhere near as much. It's mainly me. It's usually when I'm getting him to do something he doesn't want to.

He had his 2.5 year HV check last week and they said they weren't worried and it was age appropriate, and suggested all the things I am already doing - being firm, saying no hitting, hands are not for hitting, hitting hurts etc. I've lost my rag a couple of times when it'd taken me by surprise but mainly I try to be firm rather than angry. I talk to him outside the moment about not hitting and biting and he says sorry then, but at the time he literally laughs at me. I've started leaving the room when he does it (if my husband is there) but that also hasn't helped.

I find parenting hard anyway but this is literally soul destroying, being hit every day. I know he's only little but it's too much and seems to be getting worse rather than better.

Gosh I made this post in April! He is now 3. Turned a corner once he moved rooms to pre school and behaviour there has been loads better. Has been better at home too but today has been awful.

Scratching, biting, throwing things at us, general fury, shouting, screaming. He even whacked me in the head in front of friends who were shocked.

He is still high energy - spent time with lots of different people over the Christmas period and they all commented on it, even people with similar age kids.

I dont know what to do, who to speak to. How to make it better. I feel like such a crap parent all the time. I feel like running away.

Hes always been a good sleep but has now started playing up at bedtime and taking ages to go to sleep, usually after floods of tears. I know Christmas is a lot, and he's out his routine so that will have affected it but just really hoped someone might have some advice because we can't cope with him.

I’m sorry, I have no advice really, but just responding so your post gains traction.

There is a brilliant book called Toddler Taming which I found hugely useful when DD was young. She’s 17 now, so I’m not up to speed on modern toddler techniques.

Parenting is tough. I feel for you.

Sorry that no one replied back when you posted, I was thinking the biting sounds like trying to express some difficult feeling like frustration or fear, so actually a lot of the conventional methods may exacerbate the feeling.
It sounds like an he's got older and whatever stressor has been reduced he is feeling better.
Take care.

Thank you, I haven't read this book so will look it out
