5 YO meals

Writing in frustration so apologies

My 5 YO is sometimes good but just as often v fussy eg wrong type of pasta, doesn't want a meal he usually likes / we have discussed earlier.

Overall his diet is varied (for a 5 YO) but his fussiness can be v painful.

Do i just grin and bear?

If i post foods he eats will you tell me if it's not too bad?

Feeling despondant :(

I think this is just normal 5yo behaviour. My 4yo has always been a good eater but has become a bit of a pain lately re: refusing stuff she always liked, refusing to try stuff, eating everything at nursery but not touching the same thing at home. Almost every parent I speak to with a kid the same age complains about fussy eating to some degree!

Thanks. When does it become better? This is all normal, nice food he refuses. That he has liked before. Despair at lack of variety some days :(

What do you do when he refuses a meal @guiling?

Lcb123 · 24/04/2023 22:01

firstly he shouldn’t have his own meals - just all eat the same thing, ideally together. Do not make a fuss about his eating - just chat away about whatever

I found mine became fussier when they started school as they were having a hot meal at lunch time.

We have a meal and you eat it or not, I just try and incorporate something everyone likes on the plate, child a has one vegetable, child b likes today’s meat. Both are better with age but I don’t force people to eat but I don’t let them graze when home from school either so they build up a bit of appetite.

Appreciate you are trying to help but you dont know my personal situation. I have 2 younger children and i cannot eat with them as i am constantly up and down and too much to do. I am on my own with them.

It's something i would love to do but not realistic atm

What do i do when he refuses? I explain that to be healthy you need to eat a variety of food. Sometimes that works and he says all right and eats.

Usually he does end up eating a bit of it, it's just a pain to think of stuff to say to encourage it!!

I never make something new but he sometimes fills up on bread and olive oil, or weetabix (i say he can have this but he needs to eat some of the main meal first)

He's not bad on veg and will always eat cucumber, avocado, carrots, tomato sauce, olives. So there is always some of that with the meal.
