Splinter in toddlers foot! **Picture**

My 2 year old seems to have a splinter in his foot. It wasn't bothering him at first but he's now trying to not put weight on it and walk on his tip toes on that foot (although still doesn't seem to be upset by it unless I try and touch it).

I have tried drawing out ointment and a loose plaster over it but it doesn't seem to want to come out.

It's been in there for about 3/4 days now. I have no idea what it is as I actually suspect it may have happened at nursery.

Is it okay for me to just leave this? (Will continue with the ointment).

He won't let me mess with it much but I can't see anything sticking out anymore for me to grab with tweezers even if he did sit still long enough.

When my ds gets splinters, I soak him in a hot bath for half hour or so, then squeeze either side of it and it just pops out.

I've tried to squeeze it after a bath but it doesn't seem to budge and he gets very upset /annoyed

What ointment are you using? Magnesium sulphate paste is usually good at drawing stuff out.

Yes I'm using that. I'm putting it on and then a plaster over. Done that the past 2 days and nothing yet 😔

You could try using a syringe to draw it out- one of the calpol ones - put hole over skin then draw up, the vacuum often eases out the splinter wothout any need to poke around

Sorry I can't tell from your picture but is there definitely a splinter and it's not just a puncture wound that's possibly now irritated from the paste/squeezing?

Foreign objects do eventually work their way out but it must be sore to walk on so maybe just light dressing and leave it be and then GP/practice nurse/minor injuries if no improvement in a couple of days.

Ideally you need to get that out to avoid it getting infected. My little one got a splinter at a similar age and DH had to distract her with the iPad and pin her down so I could get it out with a needle. Not very nice but had to be done.

My dad used to remove splinters and burst blisters when we were asleep. I never remember waking up!

Lots and lots of baths or foot soaks if he'll stand them plus the paste. DS had about 4 in his big toe last summer after walking on decking without his shoes 🙄. I tried the calpol syringe and it didn't work but keeping the foot soaking definitely helped. Good luck 🤞🏻

Put a Compeed plaster over it, it will painlessly draw the splinter out.
Hydrocolloid plasters are fabulous for splinters!

I would see a Chiropodist/Podiatrist and ask their advice.

Never knew that - thank you!
