Sensitive gag reflex babies/toddler

Hi all,
Our 2 year old has a very sensitive gag reflex. As a baby she threw up a lot and just recently we went through a few weeks of her with a post viral cough/post nasal drip. At night she would cry/cough violently and throwing up in bed. We would hear her cough and knew it was coming. A few mins later boom…sick all over the crib. She’s been checked out by 2 doctors and they both say she has very sensitive gag reflex and she just has to grow out of it. Other than that they are not really offering much help.

Any moms out there with children who threw up easily/often? Can you share your story. At what age did your LO grow out of it?

Thank you

Hi, we have the same problem with our 2yo. Came on Mumsnet also to see if anyone had the same issue! He’s just been sent home from nursery and can’t go back for 48 hrs even though I keep telling them it’s vomiting caused by a sensitive gag reflex and not a stomach virus. It’s very frustrating so I know your pain!

My son was terrible for this around the same age, he’s 4 now and definitely grown out of it! Very similar situation, coughing in bed then we’d run through with the bowl as he’d just keep coughing until he threw up. Happened so often we had a tub in the living room, bedroom and our bedroom too. Doctor wasn’t concerned either. He’d puke if he coughed, cried, put too much food in his mouth, got pool water in his mouth 😩 somewhere between 3 and 4 it tapered off a bit and now never happens. We always kept a bottle of water and a bowl near his bed, we’d sit him upright and he started managing a drink to stop the vom coming. Sorry I feel for you, we were on edge with it so often and it’s so draining.

@QuietBatperson15 thank you for sharing your story and giving me hope that he might grow out of it at some point!

You've just reminded me that DS was like this.
I'd hear a cough and come running with a bowl!

He's almost 4 now and hasn't vomited in probably a year so hopefully it's something they grow out of.

my son is exactly the same (20 months old). I’ve noticed the gagging has got slightly better but he is still regularly sick when coughing or if he has a cold. I wondered if anyone has noticed a correlation with speech development? My older son was speaking two word sentences by 20 months and my younger son (with the sensitive gag reflex) speaks a lot less. He will say mama, dada, uh oh, bye bye etc. I can hear him trying to say ‘ready steady go’ when coming down the stairs or running with his brother but he’s not as confident as speaking as my first born.

That’s interesting. My son can say a lot of words but he has a speech impediment and had a tongue tie when he was born (snipped in first month). He has an appointment with a speech and language therapist in a few weeks, I’ll ask them!

Thanks Ops13, hope the appointment goes well! Will be interesting to see what they say x
