Baby constipation since starting solids - allergy??

Wondering if anyone has any advice or experience. I’m finding that eggs and bread seem to constipate my LO so she doesn’t have a dirty nappy for a day or so and gets uncomfortable.

I only buy brown bread and we are vegetarian so there is lots of fibre in her diet. Is there such a thing as giving a baby too much fibre?

I googled allergies but everything seemed to indicate that she would have diarrhoea if she had an allergy to wheat or eggs. They do have eczema as well but that doesn’t seem to flare in relation to just wheat and eggs.

has anyone else had this same issue?

It can be quite common for this to happen when starting solids. As their gut get used to food it should settle down.

Make sure they are having lots of water. You can also give prunes as an early weaning food.

Singleandproud · 20/04/2023 15:05

It takes a while for their digestive system to adapt. You can give too much fibre though and it can become more of an issue if they aren't drinking much.

Thank you - forgot to add that she is almost 10 months. Should her gut have got used to solids by now? I’m breastfeeding and she still has quite a lot of feeds

Children if this age doesn’t be having wholemeal food. Is she drinking enough water?

trrk · 20/04/2023 17:10

Following as having the same problem with my 9.5 month old. I've been trying to increase her water intake for the last few weeks but no luck so far.

Mamabear04 · 20/04/2023 17:17

Little drinks of water should help constipation. Things like apples and Bananas can also bung them up so look at other things you're feeding with the bread. Could be that their digestive system is just taking a while with them being so new

Mamabear04 · 20/04/2023 17:18

Also pear and/or prunes will help constipation

Lemonademoney · 20/04/2023 17:20

My ds is constipated despite an excellent varied diet and a very active lifestyle. Currently under a dietician as she suspect a food sensitivity. I should also add that he has been anaemic too which I think was the final prompt for them to investigate as this is a child that loves his meat and veg

My daughter used to have constipation at this age - we found that cows milk was the culprit. It might be a good idea to keep a good diary and see if any patterns emerge.

Oh really? I thought wholemeal was better for them than white. Should I give white bread instead? She has quite a bit of water and breastfeeds a lot still

Yes they can. Both mine have had brown bread from the moment we started weaning. We had dietician support with the eldest and they were fine with that.

I don't like white bread and don't buy it so the kids don't have it.

We always have wholewheat carbs now and we are all fine

Wholemeal and very high fibre foods should be avoided until they are 5 because they are likely to fill up on fibre and therefore not have enough calories.

Twizbe · 20/04/2023 19:02

@Iminthemoneylife I'm guessing only if you feed them nothing but bread ....

Singleandproud · 20/04/2023 19:18

@NoPoopLO it can take a while and everytime you add new foods it can take a while to adapt again.

Something rather gross but interesting, when a breastfed baby on solids stops eating them their faeces goes back to that of a young baby. I found this out when 2.5 year old DD got a really bad stomach bug and couldn't stomach any solid food.

With that said if your DD is really struggling with constipation you might want to temporarily cut down on the solids for a few days and up the breastfeeds to 'clear her out'. Alternatively give her smoothies, nutrients from fruit with less fibre and the fructose might get her gut moving again.

White has more calories than wholemeal so it's generally recommended for young children.

Lentils are good for getting things moving. Also pears and live yogurt caused us many poop explosions. Butternut squash, kiwis (the riper the better), and of course lots and lots of water. Apparently too much fibre can cause constipation.

Fleur405 · 20/04/2023 21:53

this is very normal when weaning! I find bananas in particular make my little one constipated. Kiwis, pears, plums and good old prune purée/prune juice all help as does chia pudding.

Well it’s NHS advice. If you’re not happy with it take it
up with them.

Absolutely not true. I wonder how humanity survived before the invention of industrial plants that refined flour.
It is way healthier to eat whole food in their natural form than all the baby junk food made of rusks, puffs, straws, cheerios and other crap.
This said "wholemeal " bread sold in supermarket is often not made with wholemeal flour but with white flour and the addition of wheat bran or some other bran. Bread companies are allowed to label this reconstructed bread as wholemeal.
Now this added bran is irritating for the gut, so check the bread label if you buy it in shops or try making your own. It is very easy

You can also have soup several nights a week. Make a tomato soup , pumpkin soup or even a minestrone and blend it.

BabyB2022 · 21/04/2023 04:53

As others have said, sounds quite normal when weaning. Prunes didn't have my DD massively but kiwi did. Even now I have to be careful how much I give her so perhaps try it if prunes or other p fruits don't help.
