How do I get him to poo on the loo?

Ds has just turned three and has been pee potty trained since before xmas. However his bowel movements are more of a problem. He has pretty much always woken up and filled his nappy ever since I can remember and before potty training would sometimes poo after dinner. I just cannot get him to do it on the loo. He pooed in his pants this afternoon while out in the garden and that was not the first time. How can I get him to let go and poo on the loo and also get up from bed and go to the loo?

I had five months of this with dd! Only cracked it in the last month. If I'd been "tougher" at the start i.e. plonking her on the loo at the times of day when she was most likely to do it and reading stories, waiting etc I'm sure it would have been sorted earlier. But so many people said that it would fix itself eventually that I just went along with it - and had dirty pants to wash every day...

Anyway, in the end, we stopped all chocolate (not that she had much but it was a treat) and told her the only way she was going to get it again was if she did a poo in the toilet. It took a couple of weeks but eventually the penny dropped and now she goes every time. Good luck - it's such a nightmare. She's 3 too btw

This is really interesting because I am having a similar problem. My daughter is now 3 and a half (4 in June) and has been out of nappies since she was just 2 years old in the day and a few months later at night. However, she will not poo on the toilet and insists on putting on a nappy and standing up to poo! She takes herself off to her room to do it and likes to be left alone. We have tried incentive charts, bribery ranging from chocolate to a dolls house, but although these excite her, when she has to choose between the nappy and no reward or the loo and a reward, the nappy always wins. As school is on the horizon now and she just holds on to her poo if a nappy is not available causing a tummyache and a foul temper then I am wondering what to do. Anyone heard of this before and got any suggestions?

Greensmum - my cousins DS does the same so I will be interested in the responses you get. He poos in his nappy in a corner in the room and WILL NOT go anywhere else.

Has been dry for about a year now!

Oh gawd, can't offer any tips just sympathy as I am at the same stage with DS.

Sorry no advice as my DS is 3 and still in nappies!
He knows when he is doing a poo and hides away when he needs to go. I try and ask him if he would prefer to poo on the loo so we wont need to clean him up afterwards but he remains unconvinced.
Hope someone can enlighten us all!

Thanks for your empathy, its great to know I'm not the only ine struggling with this. My health visitor's advice has been to insist that daughter is in the bathroom when she poos, even if she is wearing a nappy, to keep the association with the toliet. Given her age, she then suggests warning her that this pack of nappies is the last and then to go cold turkey. She believes she'll have to go sometime and is likely to choose the loo now. Not sure she will tho and she can fit into her 2 year old brother's nappies! (He has pooed on the potty!!) I have thought more about the withholding chocolate solution posted above. I haven't tried withholding anything treasured, and chocolate is a good choice. I'll give it a go when we get back from holiday on 8 March. Shall I let you know how it goes?

Buy a pack of Kandoo wipes

Display them proudly on cistern

Explain that he can use them to clean his own bottom when he poos in toilet.

If he is excited enough about special "poo poo wipes" he will poo on toilet.

After a couple of weeks of success "forget" to buy them at shops and he will have to make do with tissue.

Worked on my 2.

I think we came to the conclusion that a toddler always (at least in our house^ poos standing up. Asking them to site and do it must feel strange for them IYSWIM.
