Counselling to address parenting issues?

Hello! I’m wondering whether I would benefit from some counselling to help me be the best parent I can, but I’m not sure whether it would be helpful or how to start really. Im generally trying to do the whole gentle parenting thing, but when I’m overwhelmed I snap, overreact (shout) and I hate it. I’ve read Phillipa Perry’s book and think a bit of unpacking why I react why I do would be helpful, but I don’t know what type of therapy to search for or if this is something I can something I can sort myself. To be clear I’m not in any mental health difficulties, I just want to manage my reactions and emotions. I also can’t really afford and don’t have time for a long expensive series of appointments but wondered if anyone had tried a few sessions to help them? Grateful for any advice!

With the greatest of respects OP, because I genuinely applaud you for wanting to mitigate the chances of passing your own baggage onto your children, please do not follow this advice if you are not in need of mental health support. The service is already massively, massively overwhelmed and there are people struggling to function who are waiting six months because of the sheer demand.

I'd firstly advice the books "How To Do the Work" and "The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read". The sort of resolution you're looking for won't come from a standard counsellor but is something you're able to discover yourself, and the right prompts will help steer you in that direction.

Thank you for the replies - I really appreciate the support. I’ve read The Book You Wish … which is what inspired me to seek help but I haven’t heard of How To Do The Work so I’ll try that one. I feel like I sort of know the theories but in the heat of the moment automatically respond in a way I don’t like. But I don’t want to delay anyone else’s treatments. I found an online course but it’s £650 for 6 group sessions which is too much but if anyone can recommend a more reasonable one that would be great!

Highly recommend “How to talk so little kids will listen”.

Won’t help with unpacking stuff but will help with practical parenting strategies to reduce your stress.

You can find therapists on the BACP website. Sounds like a great idea. I really recommend therapy!

And I should say, you will find cheaper than 6 sessions for 650 on there.
