Breastfeeding oversupply and fast let-down.....anyone else?

Good morning,

This a thread in search of anyone else who has an oversupply and fast let-down of milk. Can we moan together? 😊 and normalize it so I don't feel so alone!

My DD is 3 weeks old and I am tempted to buy us both puddles suits for feeding.....we both get soaked! 😳

Successfully got milk in her ear and up her nose 👍 I have resorted to wearing bikini tops in bed at night time as they are easier and quicker to wash than bras. My breast pads get full within the hour.

I am reached out to breastfeeding support groups and I have followed their advice. It is just a waiting game to see if my body adjusts itself correctly to meet DD food intake 🤞

Been there! DD now 8 mo and we are winding down breastfeeding entirely but I wanted to warn you I was still regularly feeling uncomfortably full / engorged at 6 mo and weaning made it worse! Don't let people tell you "oh, it gets better at 2/3/4 months"; maybe, maybe not!

I will say that the random letdowns / leaking did stop for me by about four months, though not completely. Can't wait to not have to wear a bra literally all the time just in case

On the other hand, my baby did get very, very fat in the early months (until she got nosy and didn't want to feed when awake, ever 🙄)

Yes, I remember those times too. I used to get a towel ready to 'point' jets of milk into if the other side fired off 🤣

My adult daughter used one of those one-piece flexible bottle collectors for hers, but they weren't a thing when I had her.

I had to pump off some milk before feeding at times, or it was a bit like spraying baby with a hose. My eldest was annoyed by getting sprayed and got very complainy, which was hilarious.

Yes I have exactly the same issue. I looked like Dolly Parton when my milk came in 😳 it was bad with my first but worst with my second (now 3 months). Midwife said this is normal as my body only relatively recently finishes nursing my first. The spraying is so infuriating, especially when feeding in public and hoping that it won’t soak through the breast pad! I can’t remember exactly when but at some stage beyond 6 months with DC1, the spraying stopped and I no longer had to wear breast pads. I don’t think there’s much you can do but wait it out…

Yep. I was the same with all 3 of my DCs 😂🐮🐮🐮My body was convinced I had a herd of calves to feed.
I found it helpful to perch my bum right on the very edge of the sofa and lay back to feed - gravity helped slow the flow of my let-down so baby didn’t choke on it, and we both didn’t get soaked!

I am going through this now! Pretty much since my milk came in and baby is now 6 weeks old. I wake up with wet bras, if baby pulls off my boob his face ends up covered from the multiple squirting jets, and god help me if I don’t put a towel or flannel in the other boob when I’m not feeding. The tips I’ve been given aren’t really helping and it’s caused us a bit of reflux but I’m hoping it gets better 🤣

Have you tried block feeding? It's painful at first (as one side gets so full while you only feed off the other) but it did calm down my oversupply after a week or so and my baby was much less gassy too. I always felt bad complaining about having too much milk!

Bullzeye · 18/04/2023 18:52

This happened to me and I block fed which sorted it out. However I did end up getting mastitis afterwards. By 6 weeks my supply settled down but I've always had an overactive let down.

DS is 5 months and he is completely used to be squirted in the eye with milk now!! I only feed off one breast due to preference so there is a noticeable difference in size. I don't always have time to pump the other 🤣

I loved reading everyone's response and knowing I am not the only one who has naturally added some 'unwanted' chaos to breastfeeding 😁

So last night I gave myself a little task.....DD feeds every 2 hours. Every time she fed from the power hose of the left breast I caught the fast down-let during the feed. From 2 feeds, I collected 2 ozs of wild jet milk 😳 I could have collected more if I included the jets from when she fed off the more reserved leaky right breast.

I wear breast shells in the day that collect any leaking and I collect a good amount. I was just surprised that I loose 2 ozs during a feed. No wonder we both get soaked if I am not quick enough with the multiple muslins/tea towels.....anything absorbent to keep us dry!! 😂

I have a fast let down... the haakaa pump is really good... you can catch your fast let down from the other breast and after baby can latch on to that breast so they don't have to deal with the fast let down to feed and won't be upset.

A lactation consultants is a good idea to give you individual tips on management.
