5 year old telling school untrue things

So I am so embarrassed as I have been called into school today as my DS 5 years old told the teacher he was hit and shoved by his father at home last night (he was not).
It was a really horrible meeting as I felt like I was being put on the spot and I just feel so upset by it. They asked me to talk to DS and feedback to them again. I’m so confused is it normal for children of this age to make up this sort of thing? What should I do?
Ive tried talking to DS & he won’t talk to me about what he’s said.
i don’t know what to say the school again.
feel very stressed.

just to reiterate - my husband is not violent towards our children so please don’t reply to suggest that he is.

I can understand why you are upset, but yes of course, little kids sometimes make up stories.

Aged 2-6 my dd did this to manipulate us. Instead of tantrums she would do things like whisper to us aged 2 in a shop when we refused to buy something she wanted ‘buy it now or I’ll start shouting help that you aren’t my mummy and daddy and they’ll believe me’ and in the following years many other untrue things to get her way it was an awful phase. She spoke v v early and thought she could threaten us it was terrible

My four-year-old told me that my mum had slapped her around the legs in the half hour I was out of the house. I knew it was lie because my mother didn't believe in corporal punishment but couldn't dismiss what she said out-of-hand as I wanted her to know she'd be taken seriously anytime she told me that someone had done something to her. Fortunately her little friend had been there and I was able to ask her what had happened

My year r told me the teachers and pupils gathered round him and took it in turn to slap and hit him ...I am 100% sure they did not!
He also started making up random other things too.
I told school via email what he'd said and that he had been lying about XYZ. I want it on record in case he says anything about us too!

Friends Dd said his Mum had died over the weekend. His Dad had dropped him to school, Teacher was very upset and relieved when said friend turned up for pick up.
Dd told everyone who would listen that Grandma broke her arm when she was angry. Grandma wasn't angry I was there, Dd had nursemaids elbow and it would pop out often at that age.
They tell all sorts at that age.

Foster son when 6 was cricket mad and used to watch the IPL. Indian cricket competition that often shows what cultural things are on offer in different cities and the different cities are all named. After watching IPL he managed to convince his teacher he had been to India over Easter. She could not believe he was making it up as he'd been telling her about the bits he'd seen on TV. She even asked us if I was sure he had not been. The furthest we'd been was a weekend trip to Bridlington to see grandparents. Kids make stuff up sometimes.

My daughter told the school her dad punched her in the eye when she was washing dishes and that he pushed her there was blood everywhere. Had the school call me. Will be chatting to her when she comes home i hate going to school and thinking that all the teachers might think this goes on in my house :( my hubby is so good with her
