When do you stop using swim nappies?

DD is two and a half and is potty trained. She wears pants on dry land but I'm still putting her in swimming nappies as I don't know how to be sure she won't wee in the pool. Am I over-thinking this? If not, how do I know when to stop?

I think the purpose of swim nappies is to stop.poo escaping ,I don't think they stop wee anyway. If she is reliable with poos ditch the swim nappies.

Since swim nappies don't hold/contain wee, there's very little point in you putting them on her!
Unless you meant poo?

Peekingovertheparapet · 17/04/2023 07:03

I don’t think they actually catch wee anyway - doesn’t seem possible to me, they’re going to be saturated as soon as they hit the water. I thought swim nappies were more about poo

Ok, I have learnt something! I genuinely just assumed that they were nappies and contained wee. (Am also now slightly grossed out, but I'll get over it.)

And it sounds like we can ditch them. She definitely wouldn't poo in the pool.

It may be worth checking if the pool you attend has a policy on swim nappies. Regardless of whether they are potty-trained, our local pool says all children under 4 should be in swim nappies

modgepodge · 21/04/2023 19:56

My swim school says they should continue to wear them until they have been reliably potty trained day and night for at least 6 months! I have ignored this as some children don’t night train until they are 6-7 which is considered normal, it doesn’t mean they are going to poo in the pool! As above, the nappies don’t contain the wee anyway, just poo. i continued til my daughter was 3.5, over a year after potty training. She never actually pooed in the pool even as a baby so to be honest it felt quite safe by then.

If anyone knows where you can buy swim nappies in size 7 I’d be keen. My three year old is having to squeeze into 5-6 swim nappies cos that’s all I can find online…

BouncingWorms · 21/04/2023 20:01

If it makes you feel better I think swim nappies somewhat filter the wee even if they don't contain it (I choose to believe that anyway).
It's probably fine to stop with the swim nappies especially if she stays in the pool rather than constantly getting in and out. She will need a wee when she gets out so make sure you go to the toilet before getting changed.

I just bought one reusable swim nappy that DS wore from 6 to 18 months. After that he was in a toddler zip up swimsuit then swim shorts. He was fully toilet trained at two and a half but used the loo for poos much earlier.

ChequeredPastel · 21/04/2023 20:12

I think swim Nappies have a different sizing system to normal ones. There’s usually an age written on them

What a ridiculous rule my DD potty trained before 2 that would have been a pointless 2 years in nappies and she would have been mortified wearing a nappy at 3/nearly 4!

AegonT · 21/04/2023 20:37

DD potty trained at 2 but didn't mind swim nappies till 4 at all. It had to be 4.5 in her swimming lessons as she did Water Babies. We just told her tgecrules were under 4s wear swim nappies as some still have accidents.

thinkfast · 21/04/2023 20:38

Swim nappies don't "filter" wee. Grin How would that work?
A regular nappy absorbs liquid so cannot be used in a pool as it would become gigantic. Swim nappies don't absorb anything but should fit tightly to stop a poo escaping.

I don't know but if I rinse clothing after an accident it doesn't smell, a used swim nappy smells strongly, so I assume it's holding on to something.

Exactly this! My 3.5 year old doesn't wear them anymore - she knows when she needs the loo (she does wear swim shirts and a rash vest rather than a swimming costume for ease of going to the loo!)

The not-until-they're-dry-at-night from a PP's pool is a bit extreme. My 6yo still isn't completely reliably dry at night but he's a decent swimmer and would definitely not poo in a pool!
