Should he be allowed to quit?

Hi, I need some input on whether I should allow my child to quit a sport and general advice really around this issue.

He has been going to a local martial arts training group for a few years (he is 11) and enjoyed it a lot, he's not massively sporty but has engaged well and gone regularly. It's not aggressive at all, it's more about protecting yourself and having the confidence in your own body.

I have spent a lot on equipment and kits. He has also passed up two grades since starting and been doing so well.

A week ago he was practicing with an older boy and the boy made contact (they have helmets on) and knocked my sons chin, bruising it and making it painful.

Since then my son has lost all confidence. I went with him to training the time after it happened and encouraged him to "get back in the saddle". He did so and it was ok, albeit it is obvious he is not enjoying it like he used to.

Tonight was training and he just didn't try at all and ran out crying. He says he doesn't want to do it anymore.

He has quit a lot of other sports and activities like piano, guitar, football and tennis so I have let him quit in the past and tried to find something else for him.

I feel so sad. Should I force this, actually don't think I can or... what would you do?

Any help greatly appreciated from the wise Mumsnetters

I would tell him he can quit at May half term if he still wants to. Until then he has to turn up to training but he doesn’t have to join in. I would speak to the coaches to see if they can encourage him back into it.

Thanks, that's good advice. I will see if the coaches can help.
