Baby still cannot work out how to suck from a sippy cup

I have a 10 month old baby girl. I began giving her the NUK sippy cup for every meal since she was 7 months old. She still has not worked out how to drink from it. She loves it and she chews on the spout, only managing to get out a tiny weeny amount of water. I am also having to replace the spout constantly. When my son was a baby, he learnt within a few days and so I am not sure how I can teach her. Any advice? FYI, my baby is breastfeed and also cannot figure out how to suck from a bottle.

My son was exclusively breastfed till he was 2, with water in a normal plastic cup (no lid or spout) with handles from about 8 months with meals as he couldn't get the sucking motion to get water out of a lidded cup. He wouldn't take bottles or a dummy either. He is now 14 and he still will do anything to not drink from a bottle/can/carton - which does mean he doesn't drink as much as he should. My DD who is older took a sippy cup from 8 months without a problem. My son was diagnosed autistic at 7 so I think it was and still is a sensory issue.

My suggestion would be to try a normal plastic cup with 2 handles the first few times she will prob tip water everywhere but after a few times she will hopefully get the idea. Also only fill the cup a quarter up.

Hope this helps

She'll work it out on her own as her coordination develops. The chewing is part of that development.

They’re really bad and not recommended at all

just get a free flowing cup. It’s water, it soon dries it it gets spilt

My son got really frustrated with sippy cups as he couldn't get the water out fast enough. He got on really well with just a standard plastic cup

itsabigtree · 12/04/2023 21:14

They are not 'really bad' don't worry, it's a cup not a gun.

Your baby will get through it and will learn. Both mine went through this took it's normal and will resolve itself. Grin

She's only 10 months, she'll probably go straight to a cup with no problems.
Have a look at doidy cups.

PlainJanePerfect · 12/04/2023 21:20

Ours really liked the doidy cup. DP and I hated the sippy anyway because they are hard to open and the tops hard to clean without a dishwasher.

We introduced a variety of cups and glasses early: baby beaker, doidy, and the cheap little coffee mugs for espresso and then the next biggest from IKEA. From about a year he'd drink out of anything.

Have you tried a different cup?

We got through about five, I think, before we found one he liked - over about two months? In the end, he quite liked a Munchkin one from Tesco. He didn't like the NUK one we tried, and found the NUBY one too difficult to suck from. We had a weighted one he didn't like either, and another one from Boots...

He's 16 months now and drinks from the Munchkin cup if we're out, or an open cup if we're at home.

FrizzledFrazzle · 12/04/2023 21:21

Maybe try an open cup to start - just whatever plastic or glass one you have. Drink from it lots in front of her to demonstrate, then hold it for her to drink from.

We started like this with DS then moved to a sippy cup when he insisted on holding it for himself. He knows how to use the open cup and I might get him a tiny one for himself soon, but cleaning up after he spilled the whole thing over himself at every meal was a total pain, so it's mostly the sippy cup for now.

DelilahBucket · 12/04/2023 21:22

I used a Doidy cup with DS. Much better for their teeth.

DarlingG · 12/04/2023 21:23

We also got the munchkin ones and I just religiously put it down at every meal then randomly he started drinking from it and you could tell he thought it was great that he’d worked it out. I thought that one was best since you can eventually just take the lid off and it’s a normal cup and it maybe doesn’t have the same effect as some of the straw ones on their teeth

StinkerTroll · 12/04/2023 21:30

Ours wouldn't take a bottle EVER!! Drove me crazy, all she ever did was yell at them! Eventually we tried her on a tipee cup, we had to teach her how to use it but we had no trouble after that

parrotonmyshoulder · 12/04/2023 21:32

Practise doidy cup in the bath.

YunaBalloon · 12/04/2023 21:39

Open cups and free flow Tommy tippee cups when out. Both better for oral development (though soft sucky spouts are hardly the devil's work!).

Ahmew · 12/04/2023 21:46

My ds was the same so I taught him to suck from a straw. Started with juice cartons with a straw, because you can squeeze the carton to help them get the idea. Then progressed to a cup with a straw with juice gradually diluted until it was water. It was a bit of a hassle and I’m sure he would of got it eventually anyway.

Andbenjenwashisnameo · 12/04/2023 22:09

Ezpz cup. He just knew what to do with it the second he picked it up. Mind. Blown.

ForeverTired89 · 12/04/2023 22:20

Try the Tommee Tippee free flow cup. I used this when first starting weaning then moved onto a straw cup at 7 months.

Thanks for all the advice. I think a different cup is the answer

I'd try a straw cup. Give the cup a tiny squeeze while she has the straw in her mouth so a bit of liquid comes up and she'll soon figure it out. Open cups are fine but you need a closed cup for loads of situations like in the buggy or on flights etc, I like to always have access to drinking water.

SprinkleRainbow · 14/04/2023 11:29

My youngest was like this although not BF just a fuss pot. I started with an actual plastic cup, and then moved onto a water bottle without a soft spout. Soon as the cup came into play the water bottle was fine.

My dd likes these also munchkin 360s

I offered her a range of diff ones she is alright at drinking at a year but i kept reading about people whose babies used sippy cups perfectly at 7 months
