Am I being fleeced for school residential?

Does anyone have a school residential at Condover and if so, how much do you pay? We are being asked to pay £400 for 3 days which seems quite a lot. Are we paying over the odds or is this the correct price? Condover is a PGL activity centre.

How far away is it from you? Some of that cost will be for the coach travel. £400 doesn’t sound abnormally high.

Abraxan · 12/04/2023 08:30

You also need to take into account the increasing costs of the coach trip, not just how much the venue is to hire. Coach costs have rocketed and are having a massive impact on the cost of school trips.

I agree. The cost doesn't seem much different to similar trips I know of.

Insurance
coaches
3 meals a day plus snacks/drinks
loads of activities
teachers fees … they’re not going to pay for themselves, which is completely understandable

TwistandSprout · 12/04/2023 08:32

Sounds very normal. Schools don’t use trips for fundraising.

QueenofLouisiana · 12/04/2023 08:35

The coach costs are astronomical at the moment. A coach trip which is about half an hour each way is coming in at £650- £700.

Parents want school trips to happen again (understandably) but don’t realise what the costs will be. Teachers want to run the trips, but don’t want to ask hard-pressed parents for large amounts of money. It’s really difficult all round.

KaihahUmoniiv · 12/04/2023 08:40

If booking independently a 3 day PGL would be about £250ish excluding food. Adding on food, insurance, travel and paying for the adults who will be accompanying (it's very much not a holiday for them, they shouldn't be out of pocket) £400 seems about right, depending on how far the journey is.

anon90210 · 12/04/2023 08:42

I'm dearer than that for ds at a different but similar venue.

A friends child at a different school was 1/2 the price for a longer stay so I do feel like prices vary a lot by school/area.

Hercisback · 12/04/2023 08:42

The adults don't get paid any extra salary for going.
The school cannot make a profit on a trip.
It sounds around the same as similar trips.

Comedycook · 12/04/2023 08:44

My dds one cost that but was for five nights...that was over a year ago though so I'm not surprised that costs have increased

TeenDivided · 12/04/2023 08:44

Also depending on the time of year, prices might vary.
DD's school used to go in the cheaper winter months...

cocksstrideintheevening · 12/04/2023 08:46

Two years ago I paid 450 for four nights so sounds about right. Coaches (insurance) are ££££

£130 a day for activities / entertainment / food / accommodation and travel is pretty good

PuttingDownRoots · 12/04/2023 08:47

3 days or 3 nights?

Day trips cost about £50 a child now. £100 a day for activities food, accommodation and travel seems a lot but understandable.

I wonder if this is the beginning of the end for residential trips.

Phillipa12 · 12/04/2023 08:48

The prices for coaches are astronomical at the moment. Also, what time of year is the PGL booked for? Prices rocket during the summer term. My ds has just done a 3 day PGL locally in March during the snow, no coach was needed and it cost £180, compare that to a 3 day May trip and the price doubles.

Quartz2208 · 12/04/2023 08:50

Sounds about right

exLtEveDallas · 12/04/2023 08:52

Coach fees for sure. Our school is currently paying £85 each week for a 3 mile trip return trip to the swimming pool for government mandated swimming lessons - costs we have to pay ourselves. That’s £14 a mile, and it was the cheapest quote we got.

Our Residential is taking place just under 100 miles from home. The coach is £1200. The same journey in 2019 was £750

SnarkyBag · 12/04/2023 08:53

Fleeced by who? The school? DS’s residential was four years ago and was £360 for 4 days so given the increase in costs across the board since then £400 sounds right. Not saying it’s not an awful lot but no I don’t think you’re being fleeced.

euff · 12/04/2023 08:55

I don't think so. Ours is June to Isle of Wight leaving Mon returning Fri. £520. This is about 3 hours away and includes coach and ferry travel. Also told that the coach costs are a major factor.

Meandfour · 12/04/2023 08:56

Sounds about right.

Pinkflipflop85 · 12/04/2023 08:58

We're paying around £460 for 4 and a half days at a different PGL location. That's without most of the coach cost (most of that is paid for through fundraising)

KnickerlessParsons · 12/04/2023 08:58

Hercisback · 12/04/2023 08:42

The adults don't get paid, but the cost of them going is factored into the PGL cost of each child.
Organisations usually get one free adult for x number of children. The school may, sensibly, chosen to take more than the minimum number of adults.

Sherrystrull · 12/04/2023 08:59

That's a normal amount. Coach prices have doubled since this time last year.

WeeM · 12/04/2023 08:59

My DDs school was quoted about £500 last year for a bus journey of 8 miles round trip….bonkers! Their residential is about £450 for 4 nights to an outdoor activity place. It does seem expensive but when you break it down it’s probably not.

Topee · 12/04/2023 09:00

Our school one is marginally cheaper but the trip is early November so the cost will be lower than in the summer months. It’s quite local as well, only an hour or so on coaches.

toomuchlaundry · 12/04/2023 09:02

Schools aren’t allowed to make a profit on school trips
