Dry nappies at night

Hi! Just looking to see people's experience with this for some advice, I'm not overly concerned but it's our first child so I'm always a little over cautious 🤦‍♀️

DS who is just shy of 3 by about 2 weeks has had some dry nappies through the night. Hes had them in the odd day here and there maybe twice over the last 6 months, but he also had one earlier this week and this morning!

I say dry, the nappy is bone dry and not poofy, but absorption on nappies is really good so he's potentially done a small wee and it's just been sucked in and feels dry but usually he has a padded out one when he gets up. When I changed him today he had managed to wet through within sort of an hour of a change! He had been lying on his front so don't know if it's just because he's peed all in the one area if that makes sense? Sometimes he's wet through during the night but the nappy will be dry and it's just where he's peed off at an angle or the nappy has moved!

I've had a nose online and a lot of sites say kids don't stay dry until older than him but some forums I've been on say their kids have been dry in the night since 18 months. Hes not currently potty trained we have dabbled with it and will be doing so again likely this week as he is starting nursery in May and they prefer potty trained.

He's not dehydrated, he drinks plenty through the day mainly very diluted squash, he does sometimes have supermarket own fruit shoots as a treat over weekends etc but they are also water based. He has had a tummy bug that lasted 8 days but no vomiting and he's been absolutely fine in himself so not concerned it's from being unwell. Just wondered if anyone else has had this is it just random? I'd love to think hes night time potty trained himself but that would be just too easy 🤣

Tia xx

DS was dry from that age - we’d potty trained him from about 2 years 8 months, and when we went on holiday just before his third birthday we noticed his night nappies were dry all week. Took him out of nappies when we got home, and he’s been dry ever since (he’s had the occasional daytime “too busy to stop playing and go to the toilet” accident, but never one at night).

So it can happen, just view it as a small bonus Grin

I would definitely start potty training!

Yep agree, if he can hold wee overnight he can hold wee during the day, so time to potty train!

We potty trained my DD at 2 years 7 months in January and noticed her night nappies had been dry for a week so we removed them at night too and she's been dry at night since. It can happen!

DD is 2.5 and has been having more and more dry nights I just assumed that meant she was subconsciously learning to hold it overnight - she's been potty trained in the day since just after Christmas.

According to my mum I was dry overnight from just after two 🤷

This has actually happened to my DD several times since she was really young, like younger than 12 weeks. She went through a phase of sleeping long stretches at night as a newborn and often on those occasions her nappy would be dry. But within an hour or so of waking up she'd need it changing again. It's happened more recently too. I did a bit of research at the time and I think it can happen if they're in a deep, undisturbed sleep? It only happens to my DD when she sleeps through the night, not if she's been unsettled.

So I think it can just be one of those things, but certainly no harm in trying to potty train given his age.

Ds was a dry at night young. Nothing we did. We potty trained last summer at 2 years 2 months, and overnight nappies were already dry 99% of the time. Waited about 3 months after daytime drying and night nappy was always dry so stopped. He’s never had an accident overnight the last 5 or so months without. We used washable nappies also so you could tell is they were wet or not.

Amazing thank you everyone! Just a nice relief that it can be normal so I'm not looking at hidden causes of dry nappies! 🤣 Will definitely get started on the potty training this week! :)

Anyone have any tips on being successful with it? We have tried before and he did do a wee and a poo at the same time but since then refused to even sit on it so looking for ways to convince him!

We currently pop pants on him instead of a nappy (not the best be he absolutely hates being full nude down there) and then check in on him to see if he needs to go every 30mins/hour or before and after meals etc.

I've bought a book for him and reward chart but he is still immature in the sense he doesn't understand the reward process although I will keep trying it so he learns to associate it. Im also going to build him a mini bathroom in the living room (nothing fancy just a spare little shelf i have which i'll pop flushable wipes, clean pants, handwash and warm water etc) until we mastered using the potty and then I'll work on moving to the loo

We skipped potty. Just a babybjorn toilet seat on main toilet ( they are good for boys as higher front), and step.

SleekMamma · 09/04/2023 19:33

Just get a little toilet seat insert and put him on it each morning. He will soon learn to do a wee on the toilet each morning.

staceymarieox · 09/04/2023 19:45

Thank you! I do have a toilet seat insert ready and MIL lent me her step and seat that she used with my nephew and niece until she needs it back for my youngest niece when she starts! I may just try him on that tomorrow and see how he goes and then decide then if to skip the potty or not :)
