How many hours a night does your ten year old DS sleep for?

My ten and a half year old stepson is permanently exhausted. He doesn't get enough sleep when he is at his mother's house and we have agreed to have a conversation with her about this to try to explain why she should put him to bed.

I know sleep needs vary widely... but how much sleep per night is your well-rested ten your old DS getting? What time does he go to bed and to sleep (ie does he read in bed) and what time does he get up in the morning and how many nights a week does he stay up late and until what time?

Thanks cluelessnchaos. What time does she go to bed and get up? My stepson has to get up at about 7.15.

My 10 y-o DS is in bed by 8 and he reads. Often he is asleep at 8.15 other times by 8.30, rarely later.

He is an early riser, usually 6.30- 7.00 without having to be woken up. He seems well rested and has a very active week.

On Saturdays he might stay up until 9.00 ish but usually takes himself off to bed. If we watch a film on Saturday night together he might go up at 10, but that is rare and is too late for him, especially as he always gets up early.

He does seem to need and like his sleep atm. So I guess it is about 10-11 hours.

My ds1 (will be 11 in June) went to bed last night at 9.00pm and got up at about 8.00am this morning. Having said that, we had friends round on Sat eve and he went up at about midnight and got up on Sunday at about 7.30am.

School nights we try and get him into bed at about 8.00/8.30pm and we usually get up at about 7.15 - sometimes he is awake and other times can be dead to the world.

He reads for a little while when he goes up to bed or looks at his top trumps.

DS1 is 10 on saturday.

On a school night he'll go to bed at 8 and read until 8.30, and is up around 7.15. He's always asleep by 8.45/9. OTOH his brother, who is 7.5, goes to bed the same time but is rarely asleep before 9.30. They're both fine with this amount of sleep so I guess a lot of it depends on the individual. On days where he goes to bed later he generally sleeps a bit later too.

My nearly 10yo goes to bed around 9pm and gets up at 7am. She can sometimes still be awake later than this though.

Thank you everyone. Very useful.

Serenity - part of my younger stepson's problem is that his older brother (12) doesn't need much sleep at all. So although the younger one goes to bed earlier than the elder one, if we were to truly take account of the younger one's sleep needs, the difference would be about 1.5 hours, and the younger one would feel that he is missing out on parental time and attention (which he already is, sadly).

Hmm... this is not easy, but data helps .

On school nights my ds is in bed by 9pm and up at 7am

wekends and holidays most nights it's 9pm but occasionally 10 pm.

He does not have a tv or console in his room so goes straight to sleep when he gets to bed .

It says here a 10 year old needs between 8 - 10 years

georgedontdothat · 14/02/2008 14:03

That would be hours

The latest my ds is allowed up to on a school night is 9pm. (from 8 he is in room reading/or whatever). If he is grouchy, looking tired he will go to sleep earlier. He is awake at 6.30am

At the weekends its a bit later.

ProfessorGrammaticus · 14/02/2008 14:05

I think I would feel much better after 8 - 10 years' sleep

11 yo dd off to bed at 8.30, usually asleep by 9-9.30, up at 7.30. 7yo ds keeps about same hours; his sleep needs have always been less than hers.
