Low centile chart babies, did yours stay small?

Hi, interested to hear if people whose babies on the 0.4, 2nd, 9th, 25th centile babies stayed small as they grew up, or perhaps have they had a growth spurt later into childhood etc. Or now they’re 7ft adults?!

My baby boy is ten months (and he wasnt premature) and has always been between 25 and 2nd centile but has now dipped to 0.4 after teething and not having an appetite. The health visitor isn’t worried but my mum anxiety has kicked in. I guess I’d like reassurance your kids are thriving! I’m trying to get food in him but he’s just not a big eater and I want to make sure I’m not impacting his adult height. Thanks in advance.

Mine was born 9th centile on weight and 25th I think on length. She briefly shot up the charts but it was just an early growth spurt and at 2.5 she's now 25th for weight and 9th for height (so swapped from where she was at birth).

blebbleb · 06/04/2023 19:42

My son was on the 25th centile for 34 weeks when he was born. Since 6 months he's been off the charts. He's tall and heavy.

botheritsgone · 06/04/2023 19:50

Dd was 5lbs at birth and stayed on 4th and 7th centiles mostly. At one point about age 4 she fell off the bottom of the chart but then had a growth spurt and went back to 4th. She is 12 now and still very tiny. No signs of puberty except her attitude.

First child, daughter, born on 15th centile. Still at 15th centile aged 15. Eats like a bird.

I took aspirin on Dr's orders in my second pregancy to help fetal growth. The theory was my high blood pressure in pregnancy might have restricted her growth.

Despite this, my second baby was smaller, 9th centile. He's now 11 and over the 98th centile for height and weight. He came out hungry and has been a gannet ever since.

So my daughter has had a bigger little brother for some time!

Spyrothedragon23 · 06/04/2023 20:02

Born on the 2nd percentile and induced early due to IUGR. Has always stayed skinny but weight is now up at the 50th (and has hit the 75th) and height is the 99 percentile.

It’s different with IUGR as they are suppressed when growing in the belly so tend to catch up once born to what they would have been without IUGR.

Tellmethespoiler · 06/04/2023 20:06

My DD dropped off the level of the chart for some years. She’s now an adult and is 5’2” and in proportion for weight.

PrambleRamble · 06/04/2023 20:10

Wow this is fascinating, seems like some keep to their initial centiles and some change drastically. Thanks for sharing your stories everyone

DS was 50 at birth, 0.4 thereafter and at 5 years old is above 9th now.

He looks pretty skinny and i wish he could beef up a tiny bit so his trousers aren't always falling down but he is at his healthy weight.

KilljoysMakeSomeNoise · 06/04/2023 20:16

My youngest was 5lb 4oz at birth, 38 weeks. He stayed between the 0.4th and 2nd centile for the first couple of years. When he started school he was in age 3 school trousers that had to be turned up. He was the smallest in his year for most of primary.

He's 15 now and nearly 5ft 7.

I'm 5ft 1, his dad is 5ft 8. His brothers are between 5ft 8 - 5ft 10, so looks like he'll be about the same.

AlltheFs · 06/04/2023 20:17

DD was small at birth despite my GD, born at 40+3 and was around 2nd centile until she started weaning. She absolutely adored food, we did BLW and she was eating chilli and rice after 3 days. She shot up to 50th length and 75th weight (so chubby and very slow to walk) and she has stayed around there so far (she is 3.5 now).
I’m 5ft 4 and DH 6ft 3. She is leggy and slim though and I think she is going to be a good bit taller than me.
She is just going in to 4-5 clothes now.

PinkFluffyUnicornsDancingOnRainbows · 06/04/2023 20:21

Mine were both very small babies (I can't remember centiles but around 6lb when born). Now at primary school age and are both small for their ages but perfectly healthy and doing well at school. I am 5'2, dp is quite tall, unless they have a huge growth spurt at puberty then I think they will take after me.

VerbenaGirl · 06/04/2023 20:24

My DD was 20th centile as a baby and toddler and it tickled me that when she was weighed and measured for something in her early teens she was still bang on 20th.

Boohooyouho · 06/04/2023 20:26

My daughter was on the 9th or below until she hit 9 and started showing signs of puberty. She’s now 11 and is bang on 50th for both height and weight. My son has always been around the 25th and is the smallest in his class (year 7). Will be interesting to see where they end up as they’re both adopted.

SirChenjins · 06/04/2023 20:26

DD was on the lowest centile for weight when she was born and measured small in the womb so I had a growth scan. She’s 23 now and average height but still naturally very very slim, and was throughout her childhood.

AfterGlow87 · 07/04/2023 15:36

DS was born at 32 weeks (placenta not working properly and had IUGR as a result) and was on the 7th centile. Now just gone 2 years and >99th for weight and height, a chunk! My husband is very tall so I always wonder would DS have been bigger if born at term and no placenta issue

Lovetotravel123 · 07/04/2023 15:50

Mine was very low on the chart and he is still of a dainty build. However, he’s not far off his friends’ height and is an amazing runner in his preteens. Don’t worry!

CatOnTheChair · 07/04/2023 16:10

DS1 was born on 25th centile, and dropped. Regained his birth weight at 4 weeks after a tongue tie division.
He bounced around 9th-25th when on red book measurements.
As a teen his is noticeably skinny, hovers around 9th BMI centile, dropping when ill. But is fit and healthy. He is already taller than his paternal grandparents, so genetics definitely play a role for us.
Eats a massive amount - both quantity and variety.

tigger2022 · 08/04/2023 23:33

My baby was born 0.4th now at 11th centile at 5 months old so I'm very proud 🥹

TheWildOnesRunningWithTheDogs · 08/04/2023 23:53

DD was around the 25th percentile when born, dropped to the 2nd, clawed her back to around the 9th, then remained there until getting back to the 25th when she was 1. She's now nearly 6 and still one of the smaller kids in her class, but since DH is 5'4 and I'm 5'3/50 kilos, that seems about right. She's also fiendishly strong and good at climbing!

Spud90 · 05/06/2023 14:30

My eldest's percentiles have been all over the place. He was 50th for weight and 75th for length at birth, then dropped down to 9th for weight and 25th for length at 1yo. At 3yo he was 50th percentile for both and he stayed there until puberty. He's 12 now and 98th for height and 75th for weight.

My youngest was 98th for length and weight at birth and is still the same percentiles at 5.5yo. So, one child changed percentiles multiple times and the other has stayed exactly the same so far!

MotherOfShihTzus · 05/06/2023 16:11

Our son was born in the the 7th, and now at 14 months, is almost hitting 90th! This boy can eat Smile

AmeliaEarhart · 05/06/2023 16:21

DD was a dinky thing; in utero she caused consternation by being smaller than her older brother (apparently this is rare for second babies) and I had to have extra 3rd trimester scans to rule out IUGR. She was on the 9th centile for weight and length at birth, and stayed almost exactly on it until a couple of years ago. She’s 10 now, and still very slim but around average height in her class (I haven’t looked at the red book charts for ages so I don’t know her current centile) having previously been one of the smallest. I’m 5.10 and DH is 6.1, so I suspect she’ll end up quite tall but is just a late bloomer. She’s all legs at the moment!

17caterpillars1mouse · 05/06/2023 16:25

My dd was born on 9th and dropped to 0.2 centile where she remained until about 2.5 where she suddenly had a growth spurt and is now 4.5, still petite but between the 25th and 50th centile for height and 25th for weight. She doesn't stand out as tiny anymore though, just an average child who isn't overly tall

Tinkyrinkyrinky · 05/06/2023 17:30

No, my daughter was on the 0.25 centile!! Now at 2 year hv check 50th!! Amazing! And 50th for height. I aways thought she would be smaller than peers
