I’m hoping some fellow mums can help. My DD has never taken Calpol, she’s spat it out since she was first given it at her 2 month vaccinations.

No big deal, we’ve been using suppositories. I thought she’d be more inclined to take it when we started weaning but she still won’t take it or liquid ibuprofen. I use suppositories but about 50% if the time she poos within 10 minutes of insertion so she’s not getting a full dose and I don’t like to give her more.

Do you have any tips or tricks to help the medicine go down?

Try a different flavour - my daughter won't take calpol but (after trial and error) we found that she would take Lloyd's cherry flavoured paracetamol.

Add it to yoghurt.

What do you give it for?

I ended up just not giving it, and finding other ways of making them comfortable- teething rings, general nursing for temps, coughs and colds etc.

until they were old enough to learn to swallow tablets.

Add it to a pouch of purée

Try the non sugar free one. It tastes much nicer

I still cannot get my 6 year old to take it. Or swallow pills. My baby can be caught by surprise and have it squirted into her cheek toward the back with some success. I keep hearing of babies who love it, but we have no experience of this!

He knows if he takes his medicine he gets a chocolate button. He takes his medicine every single time.

Trying taking bottle test off and putting string into that so tricks baby thinking they having bottle but it's there calpol. Worked everytime for my daughter. Or now we let her play with the syringe (being empty) to get use to it or spend sometime putting yogurt into it so she knows it good stuff then it may get her use to calpol.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I had thought of a different flavour and/or a full sugar version, however the last time she was sick my husband was trying to be helpful while he was at the pharmacy and picked up a big bottle of the sugar free Calpol and Nurofen so now I have two large bottles of Calpol sugar free and one of Nurofen. I mean if I can’t get her to take them then I can’t but it’s just a big waste of medication which bothers me.

I don’t medicate her for any little temperature but if she’s in clear discomfort then I do. She reacts badly to vaccinations, she’s had Covid so she’s needed Paracetamol for these and now her molars are coming in she’s had a couple of episodes of pain where she can tell me that it hurts and she’s need distressed.

Great suggestion about the bottle but she’s never taken a bottle. I will try the yoghurt, she doesn’t get purée pouches but I would definitely give her some if I’d meant getting it into her so more good ideas. She’s a spitter so there’s no chance of catching her by surprise 😂

Thanks again!

Honestly if they really need it I force it in and hold chin shut until they swallow. Its awful to do so i only do when REALLY necessary not just for your average childhood temp.

I used to mix Calpol with milk. Not sure if you can do this, but I did it anyway.
