Baby hardly ever laughs

Should I be worried that my DS 5.5 months hardly ever laughs? He has done it so he knows how but it's hardly ever. I met a friend today with a baby the same age and he was giggling at me so much (so clearly I am hilarious) he can be quite a serious baby it takes a lot for him to smile. Although he does smile to me and his dad alot. Just a serious personality? Or something more?

DD was serious. Frowned her way thru babyhood. Fine, just a bit of an overthinker (still ,now age21 years).

My DD was exactly like this, and still is really. Full of smiles, initially at me and her dad. She'd give the most withering stares to other people though and it took a lot to get a smile out of her! She didn't properly belly laugh at all (except a tiny bit if you tickled her but that was kind of involuntary) until she was 7 months old! And that was from something one of her grandparents did. The first time she really, properly laughed at something we did was only a few weeks ago, and she's 11 months old now!

She's very smiley and sociable with people now though, and she does giggle more often. But it's still usually a little 'hehe' with a smile rather than a proper laugh! I think some babies are just tougher nuts to crack. If your DS is smiling and interacting well with you then I don't think you have to worry at all. When my DD was that age I was googling frantically about the laughing thing, but several months down the line I've realised that's just who she is and it's fine :)

Ah thank you both! I just have a serious chap on my hands who likes to stare down strangers 🤣

My son was like that at the start and while he's still a bit moody, he's 18 months now and definitely laughs way more.

Thank you! You've put my mind at ease. Note to self - stop comparing to other babies

DD never laughed, smiled but not laughed. She's nearly 3 now and although happy still doesn't really laugh, but then I don't laugh much either.

As a baby, my second son used to laugh menacingly 'hur hur hur,' I think he might be a bouncer when he grows up Grin

That is both hilarious and terrifying! 🤣

My DS was like that at that age and I was always worrying he wasn’t happy, behind developmentally or something (PND so please don’t judge me!)
He is now 16 months old and is constantly laughing, playing, being cheeky and massive grins.

Neither of my DDs are/were big laughers. DD especially rarely giggled. She's 2.5 now and finds all sorts hilarious.

MrsPetty · 14/01/2024 20:22

My oldest DD was the same. She smiled at me begrudgingly as a baby … but nobody else. She’s fifteen now and not a very smiley person. She’s got a very warm, kind nature but it takes a lot to amuse her 😂 she has mild ASD and jokes often don’t make sense to her…
