Shaken baby syndrome

I was walking into church and this man I've seen a few times asked how my 1 year od was doing. He then put his hands on her head ( I thought he was just going to stroke her) and started moving her head fully back and forth about 6 times while saying how cute she was. I was so shocked, and asked him to stop. My daughter looked shocked and did a wimper as we walked off. Do you think he called shaken baby syndrome? I am really upset, why do people think it's okay to touch other peoples children?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

No.

You are right to think he's a right weirdo though. In future I'd keep your baby well away.

No Hmm

Oh sorry OP I thought he was doing this TO his own baby and you wandered over and commented

YANBU to say he's odd and steer clear. But your baby will be fine

YukoandHiro · 03/04/2023 05:52

I've reported my own first post

Gosh no. Shaken baby syndrome is normally when little ones are shaken like a rag doll, with their head whipping back and forth. Extreme violent force causes the brain bleeding and trauma seen in SBS, not someone moving a kid's head like they've nodded six times 🙄
Calm down. SBS is a medical emergency. Your daughter whimpered. She's not limp, unresponsive and bleeding into her eyes, is she? No.

I apologise to all for the imagery, but it's just not something to confuse with a mildly annoying encounter.

He didn't shake her did he ? So no

Holly60 · 03/04/2023 07:40

I think if you imagine someone holding a baby by their torso and violently shaking them so that their head whips back and forward violently - that is what will cause it.

Him holding her head and moving it backwards and forwards will not do the same thing.

I can totally understand why you feel so upset about this though. He is a very odd man. Hope you are ok.

Xjshdvf · 03/04/2023 20:38

That’s really weird but actual shaken baby syndrome is violent and not what you describe

JennyMatrix · 04/04/2023 13:16

You asked him to stop? I'd have pulled him away.

ApolloandDaphne · 04/04/2023 13:42

What he did was a bit odd but not shaken baby syndrome. That is very severe and very fast shaking so the head is whipping backwards and forward in a violent way.

Lou573 · 04/04/2023 14:12

Oh OP, I know the worry - with my first I was once convinced she'd have shaken baby syndrome because we pushed her pram down a rough path. But honestly, it takes a deliberate violent act.
