Ideas for a 2 mile school commute?

We're a one car household, but due to DH's shifts (emergency services) it means the car wouldn't always be available for school pick up and drop off.

On nice days cycling is a great option.
But what do we do on rainy miserable days?

Ideally we wouldn't get a second car, long term we could look to moving closer, yes there are closer schools but for various reasons this would be the school of choice.

If we end up moving closer to the school, that would be amazing, but what could we do in the short term?
DC would only just be starting school - so 5.
Current nursery is 5mins walking so hasn't been a factor we had to think about till now.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? How did you manage it?

Could you do a bike for you with a covered trailer?

Public transport / lift shares with a friend? Or could you drop DH at work and pick him up later?

Is there a bus you can catch?

Is it two miles away or 1 mile and a 2 mile round trip?

The person with the kids needs the car, the other person can cycle, whatever the weather.

On a bike with a good raincoat on. 2 mile isn’t that far. Only when it snows you might go on foot or with a sleigh

We have a 2 mile walk to school and then home again. We don't drive so don't have a choice. We might be lucky to get a lift off one of the mums if it's freezing or the weather is really bad but if not, we just walk. No other way around it really.

Maybe a bus if one goes near to where you need to be?

I would invest in good quality waterproofs for bad weather days and make sure that they have dry clothes/shoes they can change into at school if necessary.
