DS (9 months) going to nursery, continue breastfeeding?

My DS (currently 8 months) is due to start nursery in a month. What did people do about giving milk?

I can either supply nursery with formula of breast milk.

I was donating and am tired of pumping, is it possible to do both, formula at nursery and breastfeed first and last thing?

Did anyone gradually change over before nursery started?

Yes it’s definitely possible to do both. My friend had a bottle refusing baby who didn’t have any milk at nursery around that age and was totally fine (thought it was rough on my friend - lots of feeding during the night). Formula in the day and breastfeeding morning and evening would take some of the pressure off you…. Pumping is exhausting.

My baby has about 60mls of formula at nursery and ‘catches up’ with breast milk in the evening and nighttime. We spent a week transitioning during the day. In that week, she barely drank the formula but was getting used to the taste of the formula and bottle feeding. She’s only just started nursery so I’m sure the milk intake will increase with time.

Thank you both

It's definitely possible to do both. I went back at 9 months and continued BFing. The biggest issue is will LO take the formula?

You can supply pumped milk or formula and continue to breastfeed morning and evening, weekends, days off etc. Your supply adjusts. You might find they just want food and water at nursery and milk at home.

At that age baby will be fine with just food and water at nursery. They can breastfeed when with you :)

Slimemonster · 02/04/2023 15:44

At that age we just did water and food at nursery, then a nice big bf at home afterwards.
It worked fine, I hated pumping!

Mine were slightly older but I just fed them when they got home. They mostly just drank water at nursery. Neither were big eaters either.

That is true and that is what we did as both LOs were bottle refusers. If they really wanted milk they had cows milk in a cup which is fine at that age as long as their main drink is BM or formula Wink

@Twizbe I think we'll be doing something similar. DS has been spending half days with DH in preparation for me going back to work. He has refused both expressed milk and formula in a bottle and a sippy cup. Just has lots of milk when I get back.

Yes both of mine would on the whole adopt the policy of "I'll just wait". Grin

Yep agree they’ll probably just wait until they can catch up in the evening!
Send formula if it want - I never bothered but she was a bit older at 11 months. Just had food and water at nursery and boob at home.

Can't delete for some reason - this was meant to be a reply to someone! That is not true - you should not give a child under 1 year old cows milk as a drink.
