Do primary school reports have any negative comments

My 8 yo grandsons school report was glowing. It just didn't match up to the chats with his teacher regarding some silly behaviour in the past couple of months. My daughter has felt they painted him as a devil child although academically fine. Alot of it is silliness with friends and GS seems to get the brunt. This wasn't mentioned at all in the report whereas in my day it certainly would have been.

Teachers are much kinder and more diplomatic these days.

However reports shouldn't be a surprise - it should be positive where possible. At this stage children are very young and learning to het on with others.

It sounds like they are trying to manage the issues through discussion.

My child's had negative comments in last year.
Ours was the opposite. There was no hint of negativity in the parents evening yet there was in the report.
It was interspersed with positivity though so not worth making a big deal out of.
But I always wonder after last year's report if this year's report will match up with the comments so far

Ours are quite factual, grading rather than observations. But the most useful measure for me is the effort grade, if effort is below expected then I know we need to talk to child, maybe school.

Some have negative comments phrased in a diplomatic way. I actually wonder if some parents miss then when they're as subtle as some teachers write.

A few years ago there was an interesting thread on MN decoding teacher's speak in reports .

So for example

  • Johnny is very confident in class discussions- could mean-
Johnny should take a rest occasionally and let one of the other children speak. Smile

My friend has twins in separate classes. She says the reports are near identical (much like the twins) *

It has been a delight to have insert name here in x class this year. They have worked well in insert subject here and contribute meaningfully to discussions.
In the next term we will be working on insert goal here etc

Don't blame the teachers though, how do you write 30 individual reports without a formula? Confused

I came across a report where the teacher / head forgot to check with Find and a different child's name was left in one section.

Was it a report or a PITA card?
With the PITA it's more of a point in time assessment of how they are getting on academically with whether they are working towards, meeting or above expected standards and what they need to work on going forwards.
For these we wouldn't add on how they are generally in class and would instead discuss that at parent consultations.

The report would be when the class teacher can go into more depth about how they are getting on socially, etc.

Surely reports are just about the academic side of school. Yes my kids have had negative comments where needed
