Hi guys
im a first timemum my baby is 9months old 10months in a couple of weeks im feeling worried incase I’ve held him back I rarely did tummy time with him and at this age babies should be crawling by now and my baby has no interest in it what so ever he hates to be on his stomach and just cries to pick him up so I pick him up this is what has always happened this is why I didn’t do tummy time he has no interest in crawling what so ever I have started putting him on his stomach on the floor he pushes himself up with his hand but he doesn’t know what to do with his legs and before hes even tried he’s crying again I recently had his 9-12 month check and I filled out the questionnaire and some of the questions on there were asking “does baby pull themselves up yet” “can baby bend down pick something up and stand back up again” and I’m just worried because he hasn’t even attempted crawling yet sorry for this long one but any advice thankyouuu

Those checklists aren't a great tool as you've had your appointment really early - by 12 months you would see a very different result as they learn so quickly!

When my little one was learning to crawl, they spent 6 weeks rocking back and fourth on hands and knees until they started moving! Just keep giving them space and time to try ❤️

Hi, my baby has just turned 1 year old, but in the beginning I was worried that I didn't do enough tummy time because she didn't like it, she was probably around age your baby is now but wasn't full crawling, for a good while she was pushing herself backwards instead of frontwards, all babies are different and some learn to do things before others, I was really worried that I didn't do enough tummy time and this would delay her crawling but it didn't in the end, as I say she is 1 year old now and this past week has just started learning to walk

Pollywoddles · 31/03/2023 09:11

Out of 4 babies I know, all the same age give it take a couple of weeks, 2 of them crawled at 7 months, 2 of them are now 12 months and have not crawled. No big deal, they all develop in their own time.

Some babies never crawl, my DD didn’t, it’s really quite normal and the non-crawlers tend to be earlier walkers. Re the 9-12 month check, some of those questions are clearly aimed at 12 month olds. Don’t worry about it yet, I’d only be concerned if she’s not more mobile in 3 months, and 3 months is ages, a third of her life so far!

My first didn't crawl until she was 11 months and walked at 13 months.
My second crawled at 6 months and walked at 9 months.
My third crawled at 7 months and walked at 10 months.
They are all so different and honestly the first one was the easiest as she couldn't get herself into trouble!
I didn't know anything about tummy time with my eldest. She hated being on her stomach so we just didn't bother. They are all older now and have no issues.

My oldest didn't crawl till 11 months, then walked at 15 months. She was prem so correct that to 9 months and 13 months, but still.

Don't forget some babies don't crawl at all, they just skip straight to walking. Also tummy time is a reasonably new concept and babies were fine before it!

thejadefish · 31/03/2023 10:07

My almost 9 month old cried every time I put him on his tummy from newborn all the way till now he hates tummy time so didn't do much and am in the same boat, no attempt at crawling yet (although he likes to stand if held/balanced). You're not alone & thank you to PP's the responses are reassuring.

One of mine didn't crawl until 12 months. I think sitting is the only milestone they should have by 9 months. If he can sit unsupported I would guess all is well.

BCxx · 31/03/2023 11:40

My toddler is nearly 2 but this was honestly the most stressful part of the whole experience for me. He did exactly the same. Even when he was tiny the HV was worried he wasn’t holding his head at the right time and I was doing tummy time every day but she said it should be 10x or more every day and I have such a busy life that between naps, feeds, nappy changes, classes and whatever else I had to fit in, I wasn’t just sitting in my living room able to put him on his front every half hour. I got a bit of a fright when she said this and did it more and he did hold his head eventually. I can’t remember when he actually crawled for the first time, I think around 10 months. I used to worry about it so much and it would make me feel way worse when a friend’s baby who was born a few weeks after, would be at a baby class crawling everywhere while he just lay there 🙈 looking back it really doesn’t matter at all but at the time it felt like a huge deal. It was the same waiting for him to pull up, stand and walk. He took his first steps at 13 months but wouldn’t voluntarily walk about for another month or two. They all get there in their own time. It will pass and itl all be a distant memory.. it really doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things!

naomiembrace · 31/03/2023 19:37

I think it's partly genetic so find out when you crawled. In my family all of my kids (4) and my siblings' kids have been late crawlers. My oldest didn't crawl until he was almost 2. He's 11 now. No issues at all.

CoodleMoodle · 31/03/2023 19:51

DD learned to walk well before she could crawl! She started walking at 11mo and didn't crawl until she was nearly 2. Didn't bum shuffle either. It was fine except she struggled to get up from the floor by herself if she sat down or fell over. As soon as she learned to crawl she was fine.

DS was maybe about 10mo when he crawled, and I think he did it because he wanted to follow DD! He walked at 12mo, so it didn't last long.

elodiesmith · 01/04/2023 04:19

I never did tummy time with mine, maybe 10 mins a week? He hated and I screamed. I wasn't going to "encourage" it (force).

He's 9 months and is crawling, but I always thought he'd skip crawling and straight to walking.
Unless he's not walking by 1.5 years old, I'm not even paying attention to any milestones.

DappledThings · 01/04/2023 08:12

DD didn't crawl till she was 19 months. Had been bum-shuffling since about 14 months so assumed she wasn't going to crawl. Did that for a couple of months then finally walked at 21 months.

Sorry, it's a bit twee but it means Darling Daughter. Standard on here (and other sites) to use shorthand to refer to DD, DS(on), DC(hild/ren), DH(usband) etc.
