Tips on taking medicine

DS 2 years old used to be SO good at taking his medicine off a spoon but all of a sudden he's now kicking and screaming and spits it everywhere. It's really become a big struggle. Any ideas on how we can turn this back around or how we can give him his medicine safely? Please help a tired mum

Bless you! If Dd wouldn’t take it mixed in with something (yogurt/ice cream/chocolate mousse) and I couldn’t bribe her with chocolate after it was the angry cat towel method - especially if it was something she HAD to take like antibiotics.

Wrap them in a towel with only head poking out, syringe down the side of the cheek as far back as you can get it and slowly syringe in. Blow on face to get them to swallow. It’s rough on you but promise it doesn’t affect them and they won’t hate you! Dd is six and loves to hear angry cat antibiotics stories now!

@Ostryga thanks so much. I tried angry cat and he just clenched his teeth and lips and was shaking his head continuously so I couldn't syringe in the right place and ended up spitting most of it out 😣 what am I doing wrong? He has to take antibiotics now as well as nurofen/calpol. Don't know how I'm going to be able to do this

Hold his nose until he opens his mouth to breathe, syringe in and squirt. Helps if you have another adult to pin down screaming writhing child! Honestly I really feel for you it’s awful when they won’t take it.

Have you tried mixing it into something he doesn’t normally get but is high reward? Ice cream or similar? I could sometimes get Dd to take her by putting sprinkles on it on a spoon and making out it was a treat.

I will try that thank you! Yea I did try to give him his antibiotics in ice cream this morning which is his favourite treat but he wasn't interested whatsoever 😢 I've managed to get some nurofen in his milk to hopefully make him feel a bit better to then try the ice cream again. If that doesn't work then will try the angry cat again when DH gets home from work. Thanks so much. You've been super helpful 💕

Oh that’s good. I hope it’s not too difficult and he takes it! Hope you’re ok as well, it’s rough when they’re sick and worse when they won’t take the bloody medicine. Let me know how you get on xx

@Ostryga oh how awful it makes you feel 😣 tried every covert way possible and was having none of it so reverted to angry cat and we managed to get it in him but I don't know if he was traumatised by it or the antibiotics left a horrible taste in his mouth but he wouldn't eat or drink anything at all 😢
