how sick do kids have to be to stay off school?
ds is full of cold and has a really bad cough.his nose is streaming and he's complaining about underneath his nose being sore.He had a disturbed night last nigh , up and down coughing but went to schiool and his teacher said she had noticed his cough but it didn't interfere with his work.
if he's up in the night again tonight i'm tempted to keep him off to let him rest but don't know if this appropriate. He is 4 if that makes a difference.
He's quite happy otherwise and doesn't have a temperature.

I would keep him off. 4 is very young and if he was disturbed tonight as well he'll be exhausted. He isn't going to miss anything vital and if he's got a streaming nose he's likely to get snot everywhere and spread it round the whole class.

Poor old ds - he sounds poorly. Up to yo wether to keep him off or not. Only thing I could think of, is if you think the length of the cold might be extended by him racing about at school, rather than being curled up on the sofa watching TV. And if you are worried about him passing it on to the rest of his class. Poor mite. Hope he feels better soon. My 7.5 month ds is full of one at the moment, and so am I. Sad

ds2 has got it too, but not so snotty and dh has it too and is being a real wounded soldier!!!
last year we all had a mad vomiting bug just before christmas.typical!

All I'm worried about is him being exhausted, which makes a cold feel worse.

Dd2 (3.6) is in this condition, although she now has a temperature as of this evening. I sent her in to nursery today and they called me within the hour to come and collect her (bad mummy). She went to sleep standing up by the front door! I do think they recover better if they keep warm and inactive at home with plenty to drink, but my first instinct is always to send them to school/nursery.

We had to be practically comatose before my mum kept us off school.

Thecattlearemerloting · 07/12/2004 22:27

Sounds to me like your gut feeling is to keep him off - so go with it :)

aloha · 07/12/2004 22:28

I'd keep him off for a day. He's only four. I have such happy memories of days on the sofa wrapped in a blanket watching TV....sigh!

misdee · 07/12/2004 22:29

keep him off.

alexsmum · 07/12/2004 22:30

i think i probably will keep him off , especially if he has another bad night, which means i will have a battle on my hands.he LOVES school and hates staying off.
i don't want the teachers to think i'm keeping him off unneccesarily(sp?)

My rule has mostly been that if they really want to go to school they're well enough to go (like sobernoel's mum! If I suspected they were malingering they had to stay in bed all day. Bad mummy!)

However I do know what you mean about rest and recovery, and for a 4-yr-old at this time of year I would say you were right, actually. Give him some multi-vits and orange juice and plonk him in front of the telly.

Smashingpumpkin · 07/12/2004 22:35

I would keep off, not only as he will be tired, snotty etc but also if he is unwell he may pass it on to others. Just had a bug at our school which keeps re-occuring as bad parents (like myself Grin) sent our children back too early! Now with a firmly slapped wrist from my mother of all people i will be more careful in future!!
