How much milk should 1 year old have?

My HV is rubbish at replying these days so asking on here for some general advice.

DS just turned 1 and I am still BF but want to stop before I go back to work. How much milk should he have ideally?

he has milk with cereal sometimes for breakfast, other times youghart with fruit. Usually a youghart (fromage frie type) with dinner and usually some cheese at dinner too. Not often much calcium at tea depends what I make.

he will have a few sips of milk from a cup but generally pushes it away (and inevitably spills everywhere too). Don’t want to force him to have it but want to make sure he’s getting enough calcium too…. (I also think cows milk from a cup makes him very gassy though he seems fine when he has it with cereal or during the day)
anyone’s 1 year old not drink much milk and rely on other sources?

The NHS says that 1 to 3 year olds need around 350mg of calcium a day, which is easy to achieve by giving them 300ml of whole cows milk a day. But that isn't the only possible source of calcium, so maybe keep track of how much he's getting from other sources for a couple of weeks and see how you're doing wrt the 350mg daily total.

My daughter drank zero milk until she was about 2 (also breast fed until she was 14 months). She would have yoghurt and we made sure we bought the zero sugar ones!! We also gave her more green veg, so broccoli and spinach mainly, as they're high in calcium, as are oranges.

I'm sure I was told 3-4 portions of dairy. So his cereal and yoghurt should manage this.

That said, DS is allergic to milk so had only plant based milks and yoghurt after 1 and stopping breastfeeding.

@Oopswediditagain2023 thanks I didn’t think of the veg that has calcium 😂

@Twizbe did you find any plant based to be best? I was told oat milk tastes similar to breastmilk?

@RoseslnTheHospital thanks that’s a good idea to try and keep track to work out what he’s getting 😊

@Lullabies2Paralyze I don’t know if you use Instagram but there’s an NHS paediatric dietician on there called Dietician Lottie that posts some really useful resources like this one 😊 I find it quite handy seeing all her breakdowns.

My kids like soya milk the best. We did alpro growing up soya milk until recently. I mean that's just marketing and extra vitamins. We use sainsburys basic stuff now.

I like oat milk in my coffee. The kids like it too but prefer soya.

That's interesting @Username24680 my health visitor told me that dd needed 1 pint of milk per day or the equivalent of yogurt or cheese from 12 months old, which would be 200% of her rda of calcium!

At least I'm going to worry less when she doesn't finish her milk now!

@Username24680 i don’t have instagram but that picture-gram is really helpful, thank you 😊

My 19 month old is still breastfeeding on demand so it varies day to day how much he has 🤔 He likes cheese but as for milk he only has my breast milk and he won’t try yogurts 🤷‍♀️

@Pitstop1986 Yeah I find her Instagram really helpful actually. It’s nice seeing it broken down into how to actually achieve it in the day!
My DS is 2.5 now but he stopped taking any milk at all to drink at about 17/18months. He loved anything in a creamy sauce though so incorporated that into a lot of dinners, gave him porridge or cereal with milk in the mornings, yoghurt, cheese added to meals etc 😊
Always worth keeping in mind too that there’s loads of calcium-rich foods that aren’t dairy eg, broccoli, spinach, almonds etc 😊

@Lullabies2Paralyze No problem at all 😊 I found the breakdowns really helpful myself. It’s a really useful Instagram account if you’re ever looking for anything else similar 😊
