1 year old trapped wind at night

Hi, my DD is 13mo, she had a bout of vomiting last Wednesday and since then has been suffering with trapped wind at night time which is keeping us all up for about 3 hours. I’m gutted as she’d just started sleeping through the night after battling for 8 months in her own room!
She has no intolerance or allergies, the only thing is beef mince makes her constipated so we just avoid and give her quorn and have done for several months. She has 5-7oz of cows milk before bed which I warm in the tommee tippee bottle warmer. She’s a really good little eater, loves her food, happily eats all her fruit and veggies and has a varied diet.
For the past 4 nights she’s been going down fine at normal time, about 6:45pm then waking at 11pm moving constantly, bringing her legs up and down, thrashing about, crying out. It’s definitely wind as she trumps like crazy and seems to settle for a bit. This goes on for about 2-3 hours, last night was a horrendous 4 hours though. At one point we were all in tears as there was nothing we could do to help her and we were all exhausted and seeing her struggling broke my heart.
She had this problem a few weeks ago before she started sleeping through and giving her a tummy massage before bed seemed to help but that hasn’t been working the last few nights.
Going to try giving her the bottle before her bath tonight to see if the warm water helps her tummy and also going to give her gripe water 30 minutes after her bottle just before bed. Just wondering if there’s anything else I could do or if anyone has been through anything similar? TIA x

Sometimes if they have had a stomach bug they can get temporary lactose intolerance. Could it be that?

Hol1111 · 27/03/2023 19:30

I had no idea but makes perfect sense. How long does that usually last for? I only gave her 4oz of milk tonight and she’s not had much dairy at nursery so I will see how she gets on. Thank you so much, that makes a lot of sense.

Just for anyone who comes across this thread in future as I know I always look to mumsnet rather than NHS website or anything- the gripe water worked, she woke up about three times last night and then either self settled or went back down within seconds of us soothing her.

For reference I did:

  • 12 bicycle legs (6 each leg), stretched her legs out and gently crunched them in to her abdomen- repeated this 10 times
  • Sun and Moon massage on her belly with bedtime massage oil followed by gently but firmly sweeping downward from the top of her belly to the top of her pubic bone. I just did as many as she’d left me do as she was protesting.
  • 10ml of gripe water before her bottle

I hope this helps anyone who needs it in the future!

If you can get them to lie on their right side, with the left leg bent up and supported on a pillow, that will help release it

Hi was wondering if anyone could help or in a similar situation, my daughter who is now one year old has always suffered from chronic contraption from a newborn she is on movicol which does soften her stools anyway she has really bad wind , tummy cramps , inconsolable at night times and wakes up multiple times a night she has never slept through it’s horrendous and getting worse . I’ve been the doctors and just try us with different laxatives and say she will grow out of it but she is getting worse , I’ve tried bicycle legs All Forrest has drops anti colic bottles everything and nothing works please say someone else is in the same boat as I feel so alone on this and don’t know how to help her

Me me me. I am in same boat. I have been scouring the internet. I am on my knees. I have paid for a private dietician. Nothing is working. This morning we were up 3,30 for the day. This is becoming normal. I have 2 other children and I am really struggling. All three were like this the others grew out of it when they were 3 and 3.5. I don’t think I can do this for another 2 years !! Have you had any luck with sorting it out? I am paranoid about what my baby eats when she eats etc. although it seems everything gives her wind. She fluctuates from constipated to explosive nappies full of undigested food. I read that they only produce certain enzymes once the last molars are in so this coincides with my other two children’s pattern.

Whats all forrest?

Superscientist · 08/10/2024 12:49

My daughter had terrible trapped wind if she had too much gluten at that age. Our dietician it was quite common as it takes a while to adjust to the amount of gluten in modern diets. We swapped cous cous for quinoa and we did a mix of regular pasta and brown rice or lentil pasta and that reduced the amount gluten she was having to a manageable amount. Between 2 and 3 we were able to go back to cous cous and regular pasta. She's 4 now and gets quite gassy if she has had a lot of pasta.

There are other foods that can make them a bit gassy too. Their gut is still in the early days of coping with food. It might be worth keeping half an eye on patterns to see if there are any foods that make things worse and either give them less often or earlier in the day - for lunch instead of dinner for example

Luckyannie · 08/10/2024 18:27

Thank you so much for replying to me it means a lot. I have tried gluten free to no avail. She had quinoa the other night and she was up all night with terrible wind and then the nappy was full of undigested quinoa in the morning. I’m wondering if it’s enzyme related or stomach acid or gut bacteria problems ..

Superscientist · 09/10/2024 12:16

It can be very baby and food specific. Our dietician had a patient who was fine except if they had Weetabix. It might not be gluten but another food.
It might be worth not giving quinoa for a few days, monitor how much wind they have and then give it again to see if they have a bad night again. My daughter was 2 before she could eat bananas without getting a tummy ache and beetroot gave her the most horrendous smelling nappies. It took time for her digestion to adjust. There's lots of foods that can be tricky for them to digest.

My daughter also had toddler diarrhoea and one of the symptoms that made the paediatrician point to that and not a other allergy was the undigested food in her stools she was 2 at the time though. 1 might be a bit early but its something to consider. He did a stool test at the same time to check for malabsorption and a few other things. We gave probiotics drops from 8 months until 2-3 but not sure if they made a huge difference. Teething was absolutely horrendous for her nappies, they were worse than her allergy nappies!

Luckyannie · 09/10/2024 18:43

Thank you this is really insightful. I have an app with paediatrics next month.. It just seems like every food gives it to her ! I would be glad to check malabsorption. The thing is I do know she’ll be ok after 3/3.5 years and she’s thriving it’s just the sleep or lack there of !! Glad your daughter has improved so much 🙏

SOS we are in the same boat!!!! Dr has put my 12 month old on to baby a Laxido. We had one good night and now back to it being as bad as ever. She is struggling with trapped wind during the night. She wakes hysterically screaming in pain and I feel like I have tried absolutely everything. It can take 3/4/5 hours to get her back to sleep as as soon as we lay her down she wakes up screaming again. I've tried probiotics, gripe water, bicycle legs, tummy massages, giving milk earlier than her usual, a bath before bed, eliminating things from her diet. We are at a total loss and have only been getting max 3/4 hours sleep per night for last month or so. Can anyone recommend anything else? She recently moved from formula onto blue milk but the Dr said if it was a problem with the milk she would be sick and would have diarrhoea not constipation. I've been trying to contact my Heath Visitor for 2 weeks and can't get a hold of her. Please help a very sleep deprived mum!!

Luckyannie · 24/10/2024 06:20

I really feel your pain. Has it always been like this? X

Luckyannie · 24/10/2024 06:36

for my first two the dr and hv told me it was normal and that’s just babies. So helpful. They did grow out of it at 3 and 3.5 but that’s too long to get through :( I’ve had slightly better nights - putting her down 9.3o (no food or milk after 7) , up with wind but not excessive , bf and back to sleep. I’m giving her plain foods mashed avocado, some steamed mashed fruit - no seeds no skins. Plain pasta and butter , white toast with butter, omlette, salmon.. She still has wind but she and I have not been up for hours so it’s manageable. Having said this it’s probably been 4 nights like this so it could change 🤣

Luckyannie · 28/10/2024 07:46

Spoke too soon up 3-5 last 3 nights full of wind :( with the clock change up for the day from 3 today

Luckyannie · 31/12/2024 11:30

Still huge problems here :( completely dairy free and no improvement. A flu has also been terrible with bad tummy up all night. I tried Biomel drink and her poo was explosive :( what’s next on the list to try!?
