Kids snack ideas

I have 3 children, primary school age. They generally eat pretty healthy breakfast lunch and dinners. They can be fussy but they eat a lot of fruit and veg.

I’m really struggling with snack ideas. They have to take a snack in the morning, this usually ends up being a brioche or bread based thing, they want something easy to eat but I don’t like buying lots of pre packaged things as it costs a fortune!!

Then when they come home they want another snack, often we are going out to clubs so I’ve fallen into the trap of giving them another cake type thing for ease. (Muffin/flapjack)

But they also have something sweet in their lunchbox, I know they are eating too much sugar but I can’t seem to find other snacks that we can grab and go that are healthy and don’t cost a fortune.

They all have a banana with breakfast, fruit in their lunchbox and usually an apple or orange after tea. I feel like I can’t buy any more fruit because it’s so expensive and they eat a lot of it already! They’ll definitely not be happy with veg sticks so that’s out. They often have breadsticks or crackers but they’re not massively keen on them.

What does everyone feed their kids after school?

Same! Hopefully someone will come along with some suggestions.

One of mine is enjoying hot cross buns just now but the other won't touch them.

What about mini wrap with a protein filling they like? Chicken etc?

  • Bread sticks
  • Boiled eggs (I just boil up half a dozen and leave them in their shells in the fridge)
  • tinned fruit, or the little pots of mandarins/peach/pineapple slices in juice
  • cherry tomatoes/mini cucumbers/slices peppers
  • rice cakes with peanut butter

Similar issue here. I rely far too much on pre-packaged snacks. I'm thinking about making some of my own - banana oat bars, cheese crackers - so I feel less guilty and have more control over the ingredients.

I prefer giving my kids something readily available in kitchen for snacks. Store-bought packaged snacks are big no for me.

  1. My baby loves fruits. He eats 1 serving of Fruit snack every day. He eats almost all fruits without fuss.
  2. Dairy - Evening Snack is mostly Dairy based.
I offer him other items like dry fruits, crackers, Eggs as per his availability & his interest.
