Explosive poo seeping out of nappy?

Charlotteap · 26/03/2023 23:33

my 11 week old used to have a poo after every feed for the first 8 weeks or so and it was very mushy/seedy however the last few weeks it’s dropped off less and less and now he’s going maybe twice a day sometimes even one.

However the problem is it’s that explosive and that much it’s completely filling the nappy, seeping out of the sides and going all way up his back guaranteed at least once a day. But going near the top of his back!? it seems to be very runny now it’s dropped too and hardly seedy, I was concerned it was diarrhoea as it changed to quite runny but the HV isn’t concerned.

When he was a newborn we had trouble with urine leaks and tried every nappy until Mamias and found them to be the best however he’s outgrown the size 2’s and the size 3’s seem a little big still? Don’t know if this is contributed to the leaks or it’s just his poo now? Does it get better? 😂

the nappy is literally covered everytime and soaked through, get worried taking him places now and having to deal with the pooplosion out and about.

ebf if that makes a difference too.

thanks in advance, I’ve had a few threads as a ftm and I appreciate how helpful you have all been!

Are they normal mamia ones or mamia premium? The normal ones dont have elastic back in size 3. I have found for disposable nappies boots little stories nappies to be the best for this. They have great elastic at the back. Bit pricey (cheaper with advantage card) but if they work you could always save them for out and about/predictable poo times. They come up quite large so you may find a size 2 still fits. Best solution though I have found is cloth nappies as they have really good elastic. Never had a poo leak in them, when it was streaming out of Mamia ones. Look at The Nappy Lady website for more info if you are interested in cloth.

Charlotteap · 27/03/2023 01:21

@Mymumsthebest thank you for the suggestions. It’s the Mamia premiums yes, never had a leak in size 2 until we moved up. I think the size 3 seem a little too big so hoping in a couple weeks we can get back into mamias. I actually haven’t tried boots nappies, one of the only ones I haven’t, so will definitely try them! Will also read up on the cloth nappies, not heard much about them but willing to try anything.

Are you managing to get good wind out following feeds? Mine was the same and would often be due to how much air she took in and I struggled to wind her so it all built up in her tummy and came out explosive for quite a while.

This was my life for 6 months until my little one started solids. We used to joke that others had projectile vomited but we had a projectile pooer. There were shouts of ‘BREACH!’ in my house multiple times a day.

We never really found a solution and there was nothing wrong with her tummy, she was a happy relaxed baby who winded well. Little Rascal nappies were probably our favourite in size 3 and we used to fold down a flap at the back which stopped the poonamis up the back but then it was more likely to shoot out the leg holes. When she got to size 4 we switched to the Pampers nappy pants and these were better again.

Napisan and a bucket for soaking kept her clothes stain free.

OverHereTryingToFigureItOut · 27/03/2023 03:43

We used to get this with both DC in disposable nappies. Never, ever when we used cloth ones.

difficultdifficultlemondifficult · 27/03/2023 03:49

If you can still get away with the smaller size try going back to them a little longer. Bigger ones might just be slightly loose?

Falling they try other brands and see how they fit. Supermarket brands are only around £3 a pack.

I've always found Asda little angels to be absolutely fine but recently they have redesigned them and made them about an inch smaller Hmm obviously a cost cutting exercise. So id go for the bigger size in those.

difficultdifficultlemondifficult · 27/03/2023 03:51

Pampers are also massively better in quality but also massively expensive in comparison to supermarket brands.

Mymumsthebest · 27/03/2023 03:52

In case you look at that route, cloth nappies are quite an investment money wise and can take a bit of trial and error to find the right brand for your baby. Some areas have 'cloth nappy libraries' where you can hire a pack of different ones to try. And some councils do money off vouchers/schemes for them

Mymumsthebest · 27/03/2023 03:55

And agree to have napisan at hand to soak any clothes. Plus the sun gets poo stains out amazingly.....Natures bleach

HAF1119 · 27/03/2023 06:43

For me pampers nappy pants worked better than normal nappies - from size 4 Mamia do the pants instead of normal nappies too. Otherwise we forever had poop up to the neck......

Think it was the full elastic waist that contained it

Good luck!!!

Atteloiv · 27/03/2023 06:53

My dc did this

tuned out they have a food intolerance

Charlotteap · 27/03/2023 17:01

Thank you everyone! Bought a couple packs of the suggested nappies today. Definitely agree Napisan is a life saver and saved some really nice outfits aha. I will have a proper look into the cloth nappies I did the nappy lady questionnaire last night and waiting for that back as there is a lot of information

thanks again

We found cloth nappies to be easier than we thought it would be, but if the full cloth nappy thing won't work for you, you can just use a good reusable wrap over a disposable nappy – that should still help a lot with the poo leaks.

TroubleOverBridgedWater · 27/03/2023 23:15

Also, put your baby in the next size up vests. I had a similar issue and someone on MN suggested it to me, and we've rarely had the same problem again! Often when vests are just a tad snug, they can push the poo out the nappy unwittingly. So, size up!

Charlotteap · 27/03/2023 23:24

@TroubleOverBridgedWater thank you , you could be onto something! Recently upped his sleepsuits to the next size so will try the vests tomorrow too. They are a tad snug now thinking about it

We've tried a load of cloth nappies with ours and the Bambino mio ones (miosolo) are brill. Good containment, and not too pricey. A couple of friends prefer them too. They're a good starter one. You often find new with tags ones on vinted, too.

rllrsk8 · 08/10/2023 14:14

Hi @Charlotteap, would love to know if you found a solution that worked for you? We've tried every supermarket brand nappy, checked the fit, tried reusables (bambino mio) but every morning I end up washing sheets, sleeping bag and poppy vest! Should buy shares in Napisan!

The rest of the day is mainly ok, just the first one of the day that's bad!

Caspianberg · 08/10/2023 14:35

Cloth nappies - tots bots

The things is disposables are designed and made cheap per item as thrown away, so your never going to get decent strong elastic or well fitted or other things. Where as cloth is made to be worn hundreds of times so better materials used.

Caspianberg · 08/10/2023 14:37

@rllrsk8 - bambino mio are basic microfibre nappies. Microfibre drys quickly but has little absorption, so they are never going to work overnight . Try tots bots bamboozle, it’s bamboo and cotton blend, which has high absorption for a night nappy being on 12hrs

Charlotteap · 08/10/2023 15:09

@rllrsk8 i could have written your comment myself at least once a day we knew there would be a explosion and change of clothes and the amount of Napisan we went through!

but I am sorry to say nothing ever worked! We should have been better and tried cloth nappies but we persevered and like you tried every single nappy available even the pampers poonami promise didn’t work! Once he started weaning and they got thicker it stopped happening almost immediately. Sorry that wasn’t very helpful I know how stressful it is!

rllrsk8 · 08/10/2023 15:13

Thanks @Caspianberg, I get what you mean, but even if I have just changed him to a dry nappy, the first poop of the day goes everywhere cause of the volume!! The leak is immediate, so I'm not so worried about the long term absorbency but more about the initial containment! When he's pooped you know about it so he gets changed straight away, but it's usually too late.

@Charlotteap 7 weeks to go, then Grin
