Dummy hell

Our almost 2.5 year old has has a dummy practically from birth, has never fallen asleep without it. We’ve been strongly advised by the dentist to stop the dummy as she already has an open bite (which can hopefully be reversed if we stop the dummy now). She also has a very slight lisp. The last few months she’s only had it for nap/bedtime which was a struggle in itself. If wasn’t for her teeth issue we wouldn’t have even thought about getting rid of the dummy.

We went cold Turkey yesterday with the help of the dummy fairy. She was fine during the day and today but last night was AWFUL. She screamed for hours, would fall asleep out of exhaustion and then would wake up screaming for it again.

Are we doing the right thing? I know she’s still young and needs it for comfort but I’m worried for her teeth. Anyone gone cold Turkey with a dummy addict? How long will this screaming last for?! At what point do we give in? I feel awful for her.

I think mine were fine the second or third night so keep going (stopped at just under 2.5). Sorry can't remember which one it was but definitely not too bad!

Don’t give in. Throw away the dummies or cut off the teat if you think you’ll give in. Don’t give it back to her.

Give her other ways to comfort herself. Did the dummy fairy leave her a new toy or something?

It will get easier. Give it a few nights.

Mine is 2 and only has it at nights but spits it out after he settles to sleep (teething) ... During the day he doesn't, i have noticed his speech has improved since not giving the dummy all day. He has the tommie tip ones.

I personally wouldnt just take the dummy away, but gradually take it for example only give it to her at nights because she is teething its a soothing effect, i think she will spit out at night once she is settled anyway

Thanks all! Tonight wasn’t as bad so hoping it gets easier 🤞🏽

Just persevere. It’s hell. But think of the money saved in dentists fees

You've got through the worst now so don't give up as you'll only have to start from scratch again in the future
