Tips For getting phenoxymethyl-penicillin into toddler

My 2.4 year old toddler has scarlet fever and has been really poorly. She has a 10 day course of phenoxymethyl-penicillin ( 4 times daily) to take and it’s proving very difficult to get into her.

Has anyone had any luck disguising it in food? I’m not above pinning her down and getting it into her however I’m 38 weeks pregnant and she’s surprisingly strong so it’s very difficult and inevitably ends up everywhere but her mouth!

My BF doc suggested mixing with icing sugar to me

The only way I managed was wrapped in a large blanket/towel with arms in, holding in my arm in a cradle hold, then tip back slightly and squirt it towards the back of her cheek.

Yes!! I had exact same issue, he’s had them multiple times. This time I had a brainwave- got a frube yogurt (any brand will do!) slice open the top and syringe a small amount in at a time as they eat it. By the end of the prescription I shoved the whole lot in there in one go and he was fine. I also told him buzz lightyear takes this medication and that seemed to impress him 😂

I had this exact course of medication with DS in December (he was 2.5) when he had Scarlet Fever. It was awful. I feel for you.

We had to genuinely pin him down and shoot the liquid down his throat, and even then he would cough and spit most of it out. We tried disguising it in food, but it didn't work. We tried having his toy Spiderman drinking it with him. Nope.

It tastes truly disgusting. It was genuinely just a traumatic 10 days between the forced medicating and the scariness that is Scarlet Fever.

The icing sugar suggestion sounds good. Have you wafted some chocolate buttons in front of her if she takes it? It’s not really MN style parenting but I’ve heavily bribed my older child over the years!

Choc button in hand to eat as soon as the Medicine has gone down. Works every time.

You can ask for amoxicillin instead if it’s hard to get down. Tastes better and is only three times/day
