Mother in law worries me

Hi all,
We have an almost 7 month old daughter. My mother in law mentioned something last night that has me worried beyond belief. My daughter seems to stick her tongue out a lot and have an open mouth posture. Our doctor is not concerned about it and says it’s just a thing.
However last night she mentioned that we should have our daughter checked for Down syndrome because her tongue is out a lot…..Now I am at a loss. I suffer health anxiety and this has really worried me.

I am no doctor but isn’t Down syndrome looked for and diagnosed before or right at birth? My wife did not have any extra scans or tests as she was deemed low risk but no doctor has ever caught anything or said anything to us about it. She has had at least 4 doctor appointments along with us staying in hospital for 2 days when she was born.

All my wife’s regular scans, blood work, newborn blood work came back normal but why is this all of a sudden worrying me?

If she had Down syndrome would a doctor not have mentioned it by now based on appearance? Is sticking her tongue out a big concern? Has anyone else had experience with this.

thank you

I highly doubt the hospital would miss something like that, it's more likely due to a tonsil or breathing issue, allergies etc I would push for a referral to ENT to determine why she has this presentation but again, I wouldn't worry about missed DS.

Do you value your MILs opinion generally in other things. Is she highly educated, or well travelled, well read and has a job in a medical field?

You said yourself you are not a doctor, is she?

If not, the you should assume she knows less than the doctors.

If you know you suffer from health anxiety, then do whatever you will need to to put this anxiety to bed. That may be a reply on MN, a Google at proper medical websites, or ask the doctor.

I agree and at our 6 month check we brought it with the doctor not being concerned about it. I don’t know, it must have been the way she said it that got me all upset

I think you’re slightly missing the point of @Wingo22 post.
Your anxiety is the issue that needs help and treatment. Not your baby pointing her tongue out.
In any case the chance of a 7 month baby with Downs not having the condition spotted by a medical profession at this point is miniscule. It would have been noticed when she was born.

It's how my 3 month old communicates with me I talk he gurgles I stick tounge out he copy's. Surely it would of shown up on the test. I'd try not to worry.
