Baby rolling - HELP!!!

So my 19 week baby (just over 4 months) has learnt how to roll from her back to her tummy. This is earlier than I was expecting (my first didn't roll until just after 6 months and then started crawling promptly after that) so I'm a bit 😫. Definitely not ready for it!

In particular:

  • She can roll from back to tummy but not from tummy to back. So she's gone from being a fairly happy contented baby who would lie on her back and bat her play gym to one who rolls onto her front at any opportunity and then immediately starts whining/crying. This is making it difficult to get stuff done and care for my older child as I feel I can't leave her at all! We were planning a holding pen playpen for when she's bigger so I can leave her safely when I need to see to the eldest, but she feels a little young for that.
  • She presently sleeps swaddled in a bassinet. She has a strong startle reflex but I've accepted we're just going to have to ride it out and ditch the swaddle 😥. Should I move her to a big cot as well? I can't see us getting any sleep that way.
  • She's started rolling around in the pram carrycot. Should I ditch the carrycot and move her to the big seat. I'd be a bit worried about her spine development if she's not lying flat, but at the moment, she's rolling around in the carrycot like a little barrel!

She's a relatively good night time sleeper with the swaddle but doesn't nap for more than 20-25 minutes at a time during the day (usually while I'm doing the school run for my eldest). She's also on the smaller side for her age - I haven't measured her but she looks a month younger than similar-age babies - which makes me more reluctant to move her to a big cot/pushchair seat.

Help! Any advice welcome!

My DS learnt to roll from back to tummy at around 5 months and he was obsessed with his new skill and did it all day bloody long! He was in his big crib at the time as we put him in his own room not long before and he was rolling constantly throughout the night, and then as you say because he couldn't roll back to his back he would cry. I remember one night in particular I had to go to his room to put him back on his back 10 times and I thought enough is enough! I
Put him back in his next to me cot for the next day and he remains there still (7 months old now) As it's smaller he can't roll in it.

Also we ditched the bassinet pram and swaddle months ago perhaps when he was around 3 months .

also to add my DS is very small for his age (9th percentile for weight) and he does just fine in the regular pram (though usually on the lowest recline still)

Does your pram lie flat? I had the Ocarro with DD and had her in the seat from about 5 months but it reclined fully flat so it didn't matter that it was a bit early

What size is the bassinet? DD stayed in the next to me until about 8/9 months even though she was rolling. I don't think you need to move her unless she's in a narrow Moses basket type

Does the carrycot have straps? Without straps, I'd move her out of the carrycot. Depending on the sturdiness of the bassinet you may need to move her out of that too. I agree with loosing the swaddle.
Can you encourage her to roll back to her back when she flips to her tummy? Will make life easier for everyone!

DS1 was crawling at 5 months. DS2 was mobile at 4.5 months. You've been warned!

No straps in carrycot. Pram has a bucket-type seat but it does have an adjustable footrest so you can make it quite flat although her bottom will still dip slightly.

The bassinet is quite big. She still fits easily into it.

We're working on getting her able to roll back over, but she's not there yet. Just rolls over without thinking and then has the cheek to complain about the consequences of her own actions😂! I've explained to her that maybe she should think a bit more about whether she really wants to do this, but she just blinks and ignores me.

My DS was well on the move by 6 months, but he was a great lummox of a baby who was very active right from the start. I've definitely been caught unawares by this one... she's a dinky little thing compared to her brother and everyone told me don't expect her to do things so quickly, girls usually take longer to become mobile. It's definitely a judgement on me for gender stereotyping and believing such sexist drivel!

And all the time she's been lying quietly there deceiving me into thinking I had a nice, easy potato baby😫!
