When did your baby/child grow out of CMPA?

Just that really. DS is 5 months and still not settling/taking prescription formula. Think he liked the taste of normal formula too much and thinks I’m practically poisoning him! Just can’t wait for him to grow out of it! IF he does of course

We weaned my youngest (now 12) back onto dairy after being dairy free & on neonate at 2 years. All fine with dairy since then but she was very poorly and admitted to hospital at 4mths due to reflux & cmpa.

Well we are not all the way there yet, but my girl has an IgE mediated CMPA and at 17 months we have reached the stage where she can tolerate well cooked dairy. She still breaks out in hives if she has e.g. uncooked cheese but I'll try her with it again in a few months.

Still waiting at nearly 3...

Following with interest after our last milk ladder attempt at 18 months ended in the worst fail yet with a new addition of hives.
But what I will say OP, is that it gets easier. I was banging my head against the wall about it all but now it's second nature. Sure I'd love it to go away and desperately hope it does, but it doesn't feel so all consuming anymore!!

PrincessConsuelaBanana · 20/03/2023 20:56

My daughter went back on dairy with absolutely no issues at a year old xx

MuffinFace · 20/03/2023 20:59

15 months. Weaned from reflux medication at 18 months as he had both. Hope your little one outgrows it and quickly. It can be really tough.

ShatParp · 20/03/2023 20:59

Mine was ok with tiny amounts from around 2 and now at 3 has no problems. The last thing to tackle was drinking milk as he refused until very recently but now happily drinks it.

Twizbe · 20/03/2023 21:00

Never (well he's 6 now and still reacts)

SassyPants87 · 20/03/2023 21:03

@Olivia199 we’re just really struggling to get him to drink his milk. Can’t wait until he turns 1 so I can ditch the formula!

@PrincessConsuelaBanana what formula was baby on? Or were you breastfeeding?

Between 2 and 3 for both of mine. Took a couple of attempts at the milk ladder and dd weaned herself after stealing yoghurt at nursery

Stopdropnroll · 20/03/2023 22:02

Around 2.5 Yr, a paediatrician told me they don't normally grow out of it till after they're 2. Keep going, honestly it will all get better!

FfeminyddCymraeg · 20/03/2023 22:04

my DS was 2ish before he grew out of his. He was on Nutramigen which was awful. I wouldn’t have drank it either 🤢

Travelationjubilation · 20/03/2023 22:08

Yogurts and cheese from about 2. Now 20 and still won’t touch cows milk and if he has, say, pizza and ice cream on the same day will end up complaining of stomach ache!

MrsAvocet · 20/03/2023 22:09

17 and a half years and counting here...well, actually not counting any more as we have just accepted nothing is going to change. But it's unusual. When DS was little I was repeatedly told that the vast majority of CMPA allergic children will have outgrown it before they start school. And even if they don't it gets loads easier with time - hang on in there.

BabyBunnyMama · 20/03/2023 22:17

Done the milk ladder at around 8 months ish with both my CMPA babies. Seemed to be something they couldn't tolerate when very young but they grew out of it fairly quickly when weaning (although took a while to build up to fully switching their formula).

Have you tried anything to get them to accept the formula more? I didn't have much issue but I have known people add things like vanilla essence to make it more palatable. It is foul stuff though, I'm sure things will get a lot easier when baby isn't so dependent on formula and eating more solids even if they don't grow out of the allergy very young.

Runninghappy · 20/03/2023 22:36

My 14 year old still has anaphalysis to dairy easily. Had to use her epipen last year. It’s usual though. We’ve never even been able to start the milk ladder and have been told it won’t change now.

Have you had a chat to the dietician? Which milk is he on out of interest? Some are known to be more palatable! We were told to add a drop of vanilla until she took it. Turns out it wasn't necessary for us but when we had to try another due to a shortage it was a nightmare. Third attempt by far the best!
May be a good idea to try other milks within the bracket you're in (Amino acid or EHF)

PrincessConsuelaBanana · 21/03/2023 07:16

@SassyPants87 It was similac I believe? Smelt and tasted disgusting!! But my DD had it from very early stages so didn’t know any different. She stopped having much milk at 7 months when she was properly weaned as obviously food was much nicer than the vile milk. We tried her with yoghurts etc first and she had no problems, so moved to regular milk at a year old.
