Is she 6 months yet?? She's been having bits of puréed veg but worried about the wheat as it's an allergen and she has cmpa

26 weeks is 6months, but I don’t know current guidelines. Maybe talk to your health visitor?

chillichutneysarnie · 20/03/2023 08:05

I wouldn't see any harm in a small amount. The UK guidelines say 6 months but I've read some Scandinavian ones that suggest giving tastes of wheat from 4mo to reduce the allergy risk.

whentostart · 20/03/2023 08:07

Yes I also saw something saying the same about peanut butter recently how they think it should be given from 4 months. All such a worry but she is only a couple of weeks off 6 months

I used to give my six month old toast fingers with peanut butter , he used to enjoy sucking it .

rattlemehearties · 20/03/2023 08:10

Seems old enough to sit at the table with you and have some supervised finger food. They probably wont actually swallow much but it's a good part of a very very gradual introduction to the fun of food.

I'm just so worried about introducing the allergens - I do have ocd and anxiety which I'm medicated for but I think because she has cmpa I've got it into my head she's going to have another allergy ! And I'm shitting myself incase she has a bad reaction

My son was 5.5 months when he went on to solids. A little will be fine

SNWannabe · 20/03/2023 08:22

Why toast? If she’s sitting up and looking like she’s interested at meal times, give her a finger of carrot or a broccoli stem while you’re eating and see what happens. Highly unlikely to have any reaction so less worrying than toast. Read up about baby led weaning and give it a go if she’s showing readiness. Sitting up securely is main thing for avoiding choking and putting things in her mouth herself. She’s not a baby bird.

Download the solid starts app, it will tell you how to safely serve each food - solidstarts.com/foods/wheat/

I'm thinking toast because it's soft ! Also worried about choking

So baby is 5.5 months? You can cur into tiny pieces if you want to would depend if baby is sitting well and how well they grab it.

TheTeenageYears · 20/03/2023 08:31

Even when weaning was from 4 months that didn't include wheat, that was 6 months (26 weeks). I would stick to the full 6 months before trying out toast.

This looks at the data regarding earlier allergen exposure - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8032951/?fbclid=IwAR1obLbwBa-YVy0sSDjycnLaT8EdCZ3z062tngIPHs9WEPChx8jdtitjz7U#__ffn_sectitle

This.

I was very strict with no food before 26 weeks due to family history of crohns but as my kids had none IGE allergies I very quickly introduced the major allergens. Assuming she is sitting independently then I would give a finger of toast.

AnnaBegins · 20/03/2023 13:45

Gluten is one of the last early allergens to introduce! Definitely after 6 months. At 24 weeks, if she's interested, how about some nice soft white fish, peanut butter on apple slices, steamed carrots or sweet potato sticks with tahini etc etc.
My nephew was one of the "babies" in the study you mention (he's over 10 now) and getting enough tahini in him for the sesame was a nightmare! We used to put it in yoghurt Grin

allfurcoatnoknickers · 20/03/2023 13:59

You may have the decision taken out of your hands - at that age, my DS made a grab for my unattended toast and went to town on it.

I'm a lazy fucker, so from that point onwards I basically gave him what we eat with a few baby-led-weaning things like roasted potato wedges and roasted apples.

Allergies run rampant in my family, but luckily not in a deadly way, so I was definitely cautious to begin with.

whentostart · 20/03/2023 14:33

Believe it or not I have an 8 year old but I don't even remember weaning him !! So I feel clueless. I'm just so panicked about the allergens...

I think I will leave the bread until after 26 weeks then. I have brought her some dairy free yogurts, will these be okay to try? I figured they are smooth like purée.
I have some oat milk too but not sure what I could give her that with

whentostart · 20/03/2023 14:36

One thing I'm confused about with the dairy free things is the added calcium, her formula is fortified with calcium etc so I don't know if I'll be giving her too much then when all the dairy free stuff has added calcium in ?

Theres a great book called - how to wean your baby. By Charlotte Stirling. I also follow her on Instagram. It goes through exactly what to do and when. I also used Joe Wicks book too.
