Kendamil - not agreeing with baby

Hello,
I just wanted to write our personal experience with Kendamil, as all I seemed to find online was positive baby feeding reviews and it made our feeding journey a negative one as I couldn’t understand how everyone had such positive experiences but we weren’t. Baby is 5 weeks now, and for me here were some of the signs kendamil wasn’t agreeing with our new born:
•The green watery poo - she was going nearly 4 days without a poo and when she did do one it was green, watery and the smell was rancid, very fishy, and given it was so watery she would be heartbroken trying to pass the stool and straining excessively. I know Kendamil do say the green watery poo is normal but for her it simply wasn’t.
•Excessive pumping - She was always passing gas, sometimes she would pass it and be fine but the majority of the time the gas would cause her discomfort, she would go red in the face and would seem really uncomfortable or just be unable to settle, wriggling and bringing knees up to chest or she would be sound asleep and then all of a sudden let out a high pitched cry from nowhere. Just like with the poo, the smell was awful!
•Vomiting - She would 9/10 bring up some milk after a feed, whether she was sat up or laying down and when the milk did come up it was thick like curdled milk, it also smelled like the milk had been sat there for years, strong sour milk smell.
• Grunting while feeding - she would grunt and wriggle about while feeding, although this wasn’t at every feed, some feeds she would seem relaxed but the majority of them she just was unsettled.
• unable to self soothe - I don’t mean cry it out I mean as she was wanting to go to sleep we would have to rock her to sleep, I actually thought this was just her fighting sleep as she wouldn’t settle unless we were cuddling her and rocking her to go over.
• getting more restless as the day went on.
• thick white coating on tongue.

My point is every baby is different, and not all milks agree with all babies, I’m not trying to say kendamil isn’t a good milk, clearly it is with the reviews you see but unfortunately it just didn’t agree with our baby, and reading all these good reviews was causing me distress as I couldn’t understand why it wasn’t working for us, I’ve now put her on cow and gate, she has been on it 3 days now and although it’s still early days I have seen a reduction in these symptoms. Passing gas has dramatically decreased, and when she does they’re not smelly at all, even when winding during a feed the wind she brings up has reduced, she no longer grunts while feeding, she will happily lay on her mat or Moses basket and take in the world around her and will drift off if she’s tired, no fighting it, she would never do this before hand, she always had to be held and rocked. I can’t comment on the poo side of things as she hasn’t done one just yet. She will still be sick slightly when layed back down but very little and it doesn’t smell at all and is more like a water with white bits in. And the white coating on her tongue has gone completely.

Hi . I am having a similar issue with kendamil. Baby has running green poos and lots of spit up after almost every feed. I really wanted this milk to work and I was bummed because I see it work for so many babies :( I’m gonna have to go back to aussie Bubs which is also great but I really wanted kendamil to work ! Hope ur little one starts feeling better !

Lucylu1985 · 24/03/2023 15:21

I’ve just switched my Lg to Kendamil 3 days ago. She also isn’t reacting well to it. Really runny yellow mucusy poo. Squirming. Unsettled. We were on Hipp but she was constipated. I think I will take her off Kendamil. I so wanted it to work for her x

Lucylu1985 · 24/03/2023 15:39

Mine is also sick and has the thick white coating on her tongue. I’ve been questioning CMPA but surely symptoms would show up sooner than 6 and a half weeks old?

my baby is also experiencing these side effects on the same milk - has it become any better after changing the milk ? I’m scared to change her encase it makes her any worse! Doctor has put it down to colic but she wont settle, I’m trying everything! It’s breaking my heart!!

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 30/07/2023 18:21

@Rachelnee it's fine to change formulas if this one isn't agreeing with your DD. Lots of babies don't get on with Kendamil despite the rave reviews, just like @MamaG6521 said.

Which formulas have you tried so far?

MamaG6521 · 30/07/2023 19:29

Hello ladies I just wanted to update, babe is 6 months now and she was diagnosed with CMPA about 3/4 months ago. Like @Lucylu1985 said I was also under the impression the symptoms of CMPA would be instant but in our case it wasn’t, it took a good few months for the symptoms to kick in, she was doing great on cow and gate, so much better passing a stool, but she was still struggling a little with getting her wind up during and after a bottle so we started using infacol which was a godsend for a while, but then all of a sudden it literally stopped working, it was like a switch. After she was diagnosed, our health visitor did say that infacol can mask the gut problems with CMPA for a period of time until one day it just stops working. Babe didn’t have the typical signs of CMPA, she would get the odd rash on her body and she had a fair bit of cradle cap on the scalp and eyebrows but nothing that overly concerned me, the only symptom I can say she had would be, as the day went on she would cry, cry, cry and cry, our health visitor stated this was colic (@Rachelnee ) but then I started to document everything and I noticed as soon as she woke up (she would sleep right through so didn’t feed through night) she would be as happy as can be, then she would have her first bottle, and as the day went on the more bottles she had she was clearly in discomfort and from right after that first bottle she would be restless and cry nearly all day, it took for a trip to A&E for the diagnosis, and she was put on neocate which has completely transformed her. She is the happiest she has ever been and I feel like I can actually breathe now.
In my personal opinion, I think starting her on kendamil from birth and with kendamil being so rich, it caused her to have stomach issues due to her digestive system being so sensitive, I genuinely believe it triggered off this allergy. Like I said in my original post, every milk is different for every baby and I am not saying this is definitely what happened, but in my opinion and in our case the milk being so rich was just too much for her little tummy’s to take… x

So what formula is she on now? I want to switch but I'm not sure which forumjla to switch to as from birth she's been in kendamil.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 13/10/2023 06:45

@Zainabbb you might need to try an @ to get the OP to come back.

If you are thinking of switching milk, I think the one you switch too depends on why you want to switch. What's happening now on Kendamil?

It says she's on Neocate milk in the last post. It will likely be on prescription as its expensive to buy and the chemist will order it in

Thank you for this. My 4w old has exactly these symptoms. How did you get the CMPA diagnosis?

Thanks.

CMPA is usually diagnosed by eliminating milk. Have you had a read of the symptoms?

MamaG6521 · 11/10/2024 22:29

I ended up taking her to A&E because I was getting fobbed off by the district nurses saying it was colic, I knew it wasn’t colic. I know it’s not ideal turning up to A&E but I was at breaking point with her screaming, I think I’ve mentioned in one of the comments she slept all night and would gradually get worse through out the day so I knew it wasn’t colic as it gradually got worse the more bottles she had. A&E were amazing and knew right away and that’s who prescribed her first lot of milk, and it was a game changer. I hope you get sorted 💕 xxxx

It's a little misguided to state that the Kendamil has caused the allergy as that's just not possible.

She has an allergy and, as the weeks went by and the CMP infiltrated her system, the allergy exacerbated. This would have been the same with any formula containing CMP.

If someone has an allergy, it's the irritant, in this case CMP, that they're allergic to, not the carrier, in this case Kendamil.

alis20 · 12/10/2024 08:58

So yesterday I went to the GP (I'd already been and they gave me infant Gaviscon). She was amazing and prescribed me Aptamil Pepti 1, of course it's very early days, but my 4 week old little girl has been like a different baby since - not crying and screaming after feeds or grunting constantly in her sleep, sleeping longer. I'm trying it for a month, but GP says she does have the symptoms of CMPA (hence the formula), but my little girl doesn't have any skin issues at all. She does have dry skin everywhere, but I think young babies do have that.

alis20 · 12/10/2024 08:59

And yes, totally understood/agree Milk, it doesn't matter what formula you're on, I guess. If CMPA is the issue, you'll have the issue with all of them.

alis20 · 12/10/2024 09:00

Thanks Mama, so glad to hear your issues have resolved themselves x

Milkand2sugarsplease · 13/10/2024 00:40

@alis20 just a heads up, keep and eye on the gaviscon.

We had a horrendous time with DS1 and I didn't think things could get worse - boy was I wrong - the gaviscon added to our woes by constipating him on top of the intolerance issues we were having.

Pepti helped and he ended up on Omeprazole til he was around 18m too.

alis20 · 13/10/2024 11:07

Thanks, this is super helpful. The Dr did mention Omeperazole but wanted to wait to see if the prescription formula helps to reduce any medication she's on as she's only 4 weeks old.

The prescription formula is so thin, and her reflux is the same/ worse. As soon as she's laid flat even after an hour, it comes back up, and I can hear it. Did you have the same issue? I think she'll end up on Omeperazole. I'm glad my GP is taking it seriously, though.

Did the Omeperazole actually help your little one's reflux?

Again, thank you so much x

Milkand2sugarsplease · 13/10/2024 14:12

Nothing but time stopped it to be honest. The pepti "helped" and the omeprazole "helped" but really it was riding it out and it was a long year!! (Not what you want to hear). His consultant told us to try some early weaning but he wasn't good with food so while it would have helped if he'd been interested in food, he just wasn't interested so limited success there too.

He grew out of it as a toddler and actually is fine with lactose again now - loves a bowl of cereal!!! But interestingly, the reflux has reared its head again a couple of years ago and we've been referred back to the hospital to look into it again.

Reallystuck · 06/03/2025 00:02

@alis20 how is your LO now? It sounds loads like what I’m experiencing with my little boy. Seeing the GP in the morning and hoping for some help.

Newmumhere40 · 06/03/2025 00:10

Stop feeding babies DAIRY!!!!!!

Reallystuck · 06/03/2025 09:17
