Booking a flight ticket for a one year old (seated on lap) Advice needed please

For any parents who have done this...I am booking a flight and want to have my 1 year old on my lap (travelling from the UK to Europe).

Skyscanner etc seem to automatically book flights for infants at full price in their own seat, rather than give you the option of them being on your lap, for a far far lesser fee.

Wondering how this is usually approached. Do families typically book without the infant first, then call the airlines to book separately for an infant seated on a parents lap ?

Obviously do not want to pay extra hundreds of pounds when my child is likely to just want to be on my lap. All the skyscanner type sites seem to just charge for a full seat.

Apologies, as it's not very straightforward but appreciate the input of the hive mind here.

Thanks in advance.

We booked with the airline. Skyscanner is just a broker so it shows you the cheapest flights. We then went on the website of that company and booked. Just remember to delete cookies or use a vpn!

Ryanair has a set fee of £25 for under 2 each way.

That’s assuming you are using Ryanair. Apologies of not and it’s different airline.

Book directly with the airline and select "infant" this will automatically put them on your lap, you will be charged a small amount

Don’t use sky scanner, just book direct

Book with the airline on their website. It’s not free, often the charges etc are almost as much as the full fare, at least in Europe! “

I think when we did this with BA, we found it easier to call them directly (partly because their IT system is shit). That said, if you can afford it, I would always buy the extra seat. DS used to put his head in my lap and fall asleep stretched out over his seat and having the extra space (and luggage allowance) was always worth it to us.

thanks all. I will call the airlines direct re: adding my child on after, as if you book direct, the cost for literally the same three hour flight to Europe is around £200 pounds more per person.

Is it not the opposite? That you an u2 year old is automatically put as an infant on your lap?

SamiUso · 19/03/2023 19:19

You would assume so, but each time it seems to revert to booking an actual seat.

once again, thanks all. I tweaked some settings and have sorted it finally!

A wider question is how do you use a VPN t get a cheaper deal? I have tried my VPN and unsure of which country to use. thanks again all.

Hey how are you ? I am in the same situation. I am just wondering did they allow you call and add your baby to the booking ? Thanks !
