Toddler bashing head in bed

I am absolutely at my wits end with my 20 month old. For months now he has been rocking back and forth in his crib bashing his head and shouting. No matter what we do he will not stop this and he is doing it extremely hard to the point we have seen him lean all the way forward then quickly and full force go back and bang his head over and over. We see him rub his head and just continue. It’s really distressing to see and hear every night.
As far as I’m aware there are no bumpers etc that are big enough to sit where his head is when he’s bashing, most are just suitable for babies and I’m not sure they’d help anyway with how hard he is doing it. I’m really worried he’s going to do himself some internal damage with this too. Has anyone else experienced this? It’s feeling less and less like a phase as the months go on. His crib has slats at the sides and the headboards are just solid wood boards. Our upstairs neighbours have complained about hearing the banging too but I really don’t know what I can do about this. 😓

Crazy thought, how do you think he would be in a cot bed? I’ve never moved mine this early but I know someone who moved their children into cot beds at 18months.
Do you suspect and additional needs in any other areas of his life? Is it a self soothing thing only at night? Or does he do this in the day?

My DS used to bang his head on anything he could when he was upset, from about the age of 1-2 I think. Now he's nearly 3 and I can't remember the last time he did it.
It is very upsetting to witness but he didn't do himself any injuries and just grew out of it.
I know that doesn't help

He has always been a self soother and I suspect this is just that. It’s just soooo hard when he does it. He covers his head with his blanket and continues if it starts to hurt as well. His cot is a cotbed so perhaps it’s time to give that a go!
