Parenting

Selective napping

My nearly 2 year old goes to the childminder during the week and goes down for a 2 hour nap every day no problems.

At home, she will not nap for me at all. I follow the same routine, timings and no luck.

Night time, she goes down without issue but just refuses the day time nap.

It's the part of parenting that triggers me the most and I feel so frustrated. I have some annual leave coming up and I am dreading the daily nap situation as it stands.

I have blackout curtains and white noise to block out noisy neighbours.

Has anybody had experience of this?

I am so tempted to just take her in the car and then bring her in when she's asleep...but that seems like a bad idea.

How often does she go to the childminders?

If she's napping some days with no impact to nighttime sleep, and not napping some days with no impact to nighttime sleep, I'm tempted to say she could be approaching the end of needing a nap. Many 2 year olds have outgrown naps

Two of my three DC had long given up daytime naps by two years. I would just lead my life with my child in your situation and if they had a little sleep at some point eg in the car then so be it.

What happens if she doesn't nap? Perhaps she just doesn't always need to nap...

It really isn't something I'd be making a battleground over tbh

As someone said already - just get on with life, if she naps she naps, if she doesn't then send her to bed a bit earlier!

Ok that's probably what I needed to hear. I think the frustration comes from planning the day around being home for the nap and then if it doesn't happen I think we could have been out doing something!

I think you're all absolutely right, I just need to go about the day and if a nap happens then it happens and if not then no problem.

She is at childminders 4 days a week so getting good amount of sleep there.

@DragonbornMum perhaps you're right and the daytime nap is phasing out.

Thanks all for the rationality check, much needed.
