sleep advice for toddler

Hey mums, I am looking for some advice and tips on sleep training.

My 13 month old daughter goes down in her cot fine and does not have an issue with her cot. When she wakes up in the night it's very sudden and she panics as to where she is. Then she lays down and cries and cries non stop. She cries so much she starts coughing and trying to make herself sick. What can we do? It's awful listening and watching her do this but me and my hubby need our sleep.

Thank you

I think lots of toddlers have a blip in their sleeping at this age. What do her daytime naps look like?

For my son, it did pass after a few weeks. I had to go in to his room and cuddle him on wakeups (all he wanted was comfort), but it did pass

It's really normal that she needs you to help her get back to sleep at this age. Around half of babies at 12 months need parental input to help them get back to sleep in the night. Whether that's patting, rocking or putting her in your bed, it's up to you.

You might find the No Cry Sleep Solution for Toddlers and Preschoolers helpful too.

How many naps does she have in total? At that age mine napped from roughly 1pm to 3 pm. If they ever napped past 3 pm they didn't sleep much at night.

Most of the time 1 or 2 naps but no more than this but starting to only get more of the 1 nap but it can last for about 2 hours. x

I'd start putting her down for a nap after lunch. She will be horrendous a bit miserable for a few days abs you might need to bring bedtime a little earlier.

One more thing you could try is sleeping with her sheets fir a night or two before you put them on her cot so that it has a nice reassuring smell of you. We sometimes forget just how much little ones rely on their sense of smell for comfort Wink

I get you need your sleep but your toddler also needs your comfort and reassuring. I don’t understand how you can ignore her to the point of coughing and being sick? There is no “trying” to make herself sick, she’s so distraught she’s gagging and almost being sick. She’s not purposely doing it

i get it’s tough but babies sleep comes in waves. Deal with the tiredness, comfort her and chances are she’ll eventually sleep.

Does she have a night light. Also we worked out our baby hated the door shut. Leave the door open and night light. Just go in and reassure them leave. Keep on repeating every five minutes and she will get the hang of it.

I just saw she naps 4 to six. That is way too late. Awake from 2pm and bed at 7 worked well for us. Nap straight after lunch.
