6m leaking every night

Hi all,

my 6m old is fully filling and leaking through her nappy vest sleepsuit and bag every night. She’s 8.2kg and in size 3 nappies, usually pampers but currently also, because , well - cost really. But she was leaking in pampers too.

her sleep isn’t great (it’s awful) we had a rough 4m sleep regression to hourlyvwaking, then straight into covid and now a chest infection and is usually down at 7:30 after bf to sleep, up at 11, 2 4 and 6 IF I feed her as soon as she stirs, if I leave her she wakes up properly and is up for hours.

because of the above I don’t want to change her in the middle of the night because we’ll be up then for hours (in recent weeks I’ve been getting max 2-3 hours broken sleep and I’m losing my mind).

overnight she’s only feeding for like 5-10 mins a time, so not taking huge amounts.

wtf do I do about the leaks? Laundry is ridiculous plus it’s now waking her up anyway. We’ve been up since 4:30 due to the biggest leak I’ve ever seen!!!

and yes I’m checking all the seams. I’m neurotic about that

Is she having a big feed at 7? If so, you really have to change her at the 11 waking to avoid her ending up sodden. Change her in the dark, no talking, then feed and back into the cot.

Size up the nappy

MoreCreamDear · 17/03/2023 06:33

Hi, I could have written your post! Only thing I found which solved the problem almost completely were Sposie pads. A bit expensive but worth it for sleep and saving on washing. I've heard tena lady work too and are cheaper but I found these better. Kids Booster Pads Diaper Doubler, 90 count, 3 Packs of 30 amzn.eu/d/8AcSY7J Sposie pads

Feed tat 7 is about 20 mins. I’ll try that at 11 as we’re up anyway.

shes not big enough for the next nappy, won’t it leak still if it’s too big?

Size 4 says from 9kg but It also depends on their body shape. No harm in trying the bigger size as you'll need them at some point

PepsiMaxandPringleStacks · 17/03/2023 06:38

There should be a 3+ option. Same size but bigger absorbancy, what times are you changing the nappy?

Could she be waking up/not sleeping well because of the leaks?

PepsiMaxandPringleStacks · 17/03/2023 06:39

Like if you're changing her at 7.30pm then not wanting to change her again til the morning that's a bit much at 6 months..

AllIwantforChristmas22 · 17/03/2023 06:42

She feeds 4 times a night, of course nappy won’t hold 10 hours. Maybe her sleep would improve if she didn’t have heavy or big nappies. You have to change her at least once in the night and go up a size.

dementedpixie · 17/03/2023 06:42

Don't think you get 3+ nappies
4+ seems to be the first one with a '+'

WooWooWinnie · 17/03/2023 06:45

We had this. A 4+ nappy helped, but the main problem was that her vests were too tight. Well, not really too tight - they fit, but when the nappy swelled overnight, the poppers made it tight so wee was leaking out of the top/sides. Now we make sure her nightclothes are on the baggy side and it’s solved the problem.

MrNook · 17/03/2023 06:48

Size up the nappy, DD was always in the size above what the weight guide on the packet said she should be in because she was chunky as a baby

Ostryga · 17/03/2023 06:50

I would change nappy brand, Pampers are notorious for leaking. I got on well with Aldi Mamia. Cheaper too!

Also isn’t it better to do a quick change in the night rather than having to wash every single thing every day? It’s not comfy for baby to be wet all night long.

Magicmonster · 17/03/2023 06:51

Have you tried double nappy? I know it doesn’t help with cost but was how we solved the same issue with my son.

tortiecat · 17/03/2023 07:00

Try a 4+ pull up pant and a bigger vest. The wake ups are tough enough without having to deal with the laundry too!!

BuffaloCauliflower · 17/03/2023 07:40

Go up a size and try pull ups instead, they hold much more. 4+ absorbency should do it. Tesco Flo and Fred are great, never had leaks even through all night feeds.

Cluelessfirstimer · 17/03/2023 08:53

The sizes on the packets overlap ridiculously. My DS was 8kg at 6 months and in size 4 from morrisons. Pees like a trooper and usually never get any leaks overnight.

Amazing nappies IMO

NameChangeFor2023 · 17/03/2023 09:01

Besides the point, but I almost googled "nappy vest sleepsuit" then saw "and bag" and realised it meant all three. I thought there was a new nighttime suit/nappy combo for me to try with the little one!

Definitely go up a size for bed. I remember the days of two sizes in the drawers for this.

I also wish I started pull ups earlier. They're brilliant.

sunseaandme · 17/03/2023 09:31

I have a 6 month old too and I buy nappies from all different places as we shop in many different supermarkets and as others have said the brand names a huge difference. My DS is also size 3 but the Lidl and Aldi ones leak, but the Tesco and sainsburys one don't. I think these holes being too loose is a big part in whether they leak. Try a different brand. Rascals nappies at Tesco are very good

sunseaandme · 17/03/2023 09:32

The leg holes that was meant to say!

nattergal · 17/03/2023 09:41

Similar issue here. 7 month old boy leaks from the front of the nappy every night. I've tried sizing up, different brands, pull ups, pull ups over the top of the nappy, backwards nappy over the top of another nappy, bigger vests. Still leaking every single night. He gets changed at about 11 and sometimes is leaking by 2/3am. All started when he started rolling into his front to sleep, I think it's the constant pressure from his front, plus wriggling about is making it push out over the top of the nappy. I feel your pain!

nattergal · 17/03/2023 10:07

I'm getting a cloth nappy to try out (tots bots bamboozle system) to see if that helps. I'm also wondering if just adding a reusable booster to the disposable nappy might help

Napmum · 17/03/2023 10:44

My baby had this issue, I went up a nappy size and changed brand. Pampers don't seem to work well for my kid

Babyboomtastic · 17/03/2023 10:52

I think you really have to change at night if she weeing that much. Sorry

BakeOffRewatch · 17/03/2023 10:57

Could you try feeding her more during the day, more often than she demands? It might lead to less waking, feeding and peeing at night.

I would change her before you feed her at night, you don’t want to leave it as it’s acidic and for mine, it easily led to nappy rash and then that was another pain on top of everything else, including the crying from discomfort.
