Night time toilet training

taylorrosej · 10/03/2023 07:48

My son is fully toilet trained in the day but at night time I pop a pull up on and it full by morning. The problem is about 4 out of 7 nights it leaks. I check him each night when up and I can manage to change him and the bed without him waking. I have tried different brands and last night I used pampers and I ended up changing him and the bed twice. I'm 36 weeks pregnant and starting to struggle. I really want to help my little boy and keep him dry till he is ready to have no pull-up. Any ideas or advice would be great fully received.

How old is he ?

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 10/03/2023 07:51

You cant really train like day time as its hormone based at night. Are you limiting water intake in the run up to bed time and getting him to do final wee's before bed?

You ciukd try lifting him in his sleep onto the toilet when you go to bed

He is 3 years 11 months. I do final wee before bed and limit water intake from 6

With being 36 weeks pregnant I struggle to lift him now. His dad works nights so he isn't around to help but I had thought about lifting him on to the toilet.

If you’re going to ‘lift’ him, you don’t actually physically lift him, you wake him and walk him to and from the toilet.
Youd do it just before you go to bed.

henrilechat · 10/03/2023 08:54

Being dry at night isn't something you can force. His body needs to start making the right hormones first. He's not even 4 yet so it's not like he's delayed.
Is it the leaking that's the problem? Could you not just use nappies overnight instead? They hold lots more than a pull up.

yikesanotherbooboo · 10/03/2023 09:09

Night time training isn't a thing. You wait until they are reliably dry. If the nappies/ pull ups aren't adequate try a different brand and put a pad on the bed. Most children are dry at night between two and five but a significant proportion of perfectly normal children aren't dry at ten. It isn't related to daytime dryness. You can't force it and lifting doesn't help. When children are older ,7 or 8 and above ,some techniques or medication can help if you wish.Look at the ERIC website if you wish.

We use nappies instead of pull ups. We find this helps reduce leaks

FlounderingFruitcake · 10/03/2023 09:37

It’s hormonal, the average age is 4, but later is normal too. It’s not something you can train really, although you could also up fluids during the day to try to increase bladder capacity. We did nothing and the week of her 4th birthday DD just started waking dry. I think you need to focus on trying to find nappies/pull ups that don’t leak. 2 leaks a night is a lot, by any chance have you sized up and now they’re too baggy? We found Huggies night time pull ups the best, in the correct age size. You could also double up and/or put a booster from reusable nappy inside in the pull up. Oh and if you do do lifting, you gentle wake them and walk them to the loo, you don’t actually lift them up.

MillieG13 · 10/03/2023 10:46

100% would try nappies over pull ups as I find they get a greater fit and stop leaks

Twizbe · 10/03/2023 11:05

Night time dryness is hormonal driven and you can't train it.

Wee before bed for sure. Perhaps size up as well if it's not holding what he produces.

My niece has only just become dry at night at 8 and a half years old. They thought she would just stop weeing at night but sometimes she would go twice!
They ordered a bed wetting alarm and it worked within a week. She's been dry since. Worth a try.
My MIL had one for my partner too when he was about 4/5 and it worked, you could get them on the nhs back then but you can't now

Geneticsbunny · 10/03/2023 11:23

If there is a chance he is sticking his hands down there and this is causing the leaks, you could try putting him back into a onesie or a poppered vest? Nappies are definitely better for night time though

taylorrosej · 10/03/2023 15:10

Thank you for all your responses. Wasn't looking to train him to be dry at night was just looking for a way to keep his pull-up from leaking till he naturally stops peeing in the night when every that maybe. I have had to pull his hands out his pull-up in the night so a onesie could be a good shout. He likes the pull-ups at night as it makes him feel like a big boy but I had thought about trying a nappy again. Just want him to be comfortable through the night so will have a look into these things thanks

Based on your update the hands are likely the cause. Onesie is definitely the first thing I’d try in that case.
