Potty training at 18 months?

Completely happy to be told it’s way too soon.

We’ve had a potty in the bathroom for a few months as it was given to us and I haven’t anywhere else to store it. DS usually sits on it most days but just playing about really.

Last few nights, when in the bath, DS has stood up and started weeing, laughed then stopped weeing, paused, started again, laughed etc. So he has clearly figured out how to stop and start mid-flow. He thinks this is hilarious.

This morning, he said wee wee and walked to bathroom. I put him on potty but no wee. 20mins later he did the same thing, again no wee. Same thing about 30mins later. No wees in nappy during this time either. On the third time, he ran off while I was using the toilet, then came and got me to show me his ‘wee wee’ on my bedroom floor. So he obviously did need a wee, but it wasn’t happening on the potty or in nappy.

This was about 2hrs ago and nappy is dry since.

He has also started pulling on nappy before and after pooing for last few weeks. He also tells me when he is doing a poo and wants to see it in the nappy after change 🙈

Are these signs of readiness or not really?

Thank you

No harm in giving it a go! He certainly seems enthusiastic so why not make the most of that enthusiasm now and see how he takes to it? Some 18 month olds are ready for potty training.

our DD was showing lots of signs of readiness at 18 months and we gave it a go but she was very very resistant to sitting on the potty so we had a break and put her back into pull ups. After a couple more attempts, she is now trained at 2.5 years so just bare in mind that you may need to take a step back if he finds it stressful. It sounds encouraging that he’s happy to sit on the potty now though. My mum apparently trained me successfully at 18 months 🤷‍♀️

Thank you for your reply. We’ll give it a go then and see what happens, I have no issues backing off and trying again later if he’s not ready.

Definitely worth giving it a go! My mum apparently started with me at 18 months.

My daughter trained herself at around that age. She wet herself when I was changing her happy and was horrified. I had a potty so I showed her and after that she always pointed at it when she wanted to go. I have to say, it was extremely stressful as she couldn’t talk so it was her leading me to it when she needed to go. She started not wanting to wear nappies at all so I ended up having to put her on it before we left to go out and then when we got to where we were going but I don’t actually remember any accidents, so it did work! But it was extremely stressful for me !!

I used to sit mine on the potty from about 7months, usually first thing in the morning and then before bath. Sometimes they did a wee mostly not. I did it largely so the potty was something they were used to, and not scared of it. It did seem to work as they were both happy to use it before they were 2.

Do it! I potty trained DD at 20 months. She mastered it in 2 days.
Had tummy upset the following week at nursery and refused to have a nappy on. Just sat on the potty for an hour.
I made a HUGE fuss when she did it in the potty and she soon got the idea that was what to do!
DS was a whole different story!

Give it a go and be prepared to stop if it doesn't click.

Some children are ready earlier than others.

Give it a go. We did it at almost bang on 2 with DS, but I reckon we could have potentially done it a few months earlier. Other thought is if you wait a few months the weather will be a bit nicer, which will help. I don’t think either is wrong.
