Diagnosing Autism in a 2 Year Old

My son is showing a lot of signs of autism and has been since he was tiny.

The health visitor made a referral to a paediatrician 2 weeks ago.

Just wondering what happens now? Does he have an autism assessment? How long does it take to diagnose? What’s the process? How do they check?

My daughter was diagnosed the week of her second birthday so for us it happened like this. 12 months saw GP raised concerns regarding regression and loss of skills. 13 months referred to developmental paediatrician. 15 months saw paediatrician who ordered chromosome and metabolic disorders testing. 17 months testing came back clear so moved to multidisciplinary assessment. Appointments with SALT, OT, Child Psychologist, Early Years SSEN teaching service, sight and hearing assessment and six weeks at the SEN nursery at the child development clinic so that she could be observed by all members of the team. Multidisciplinary team meeting just before second birthday and diagnosis confirmed soon after. It may differ depending on where you live and who you see. Our paediatrician saw value in an early diagnosis particularly because at the time it helped with getting education needs met.

Dd was referred at her 2 year old check up (USA) for assessment as showing delays in 5/6 things they measured. Ran various tests including screening for Retts. Was diagnosed with dyspraxia a few weeks later that autism at 2 3/4.

I'll be honest though, early diagnosis only helps if you have access to an early intervention programme which isn't available in the U.K. where we now live. Dd had 12 hours a week therapy from 2.5 years old all paid for by federal funding, on returning to the U.K. she was offered zero therapy

My sister got early intervention for my nephew through Blue Sky. Made a world of difference. They did remote play therapy during lockdown.

My daughter had portage and later support from the early years SEN teaching service. She had speech therapy at home as well.
