Is there some magical that you can buy???

Not magic, but we found calendula cream absolutely wonderful. A lot of people recommend calomine lotion, but it's very drying - I think a cream's better.

A warm bath with a big handful of bicarbonate of soda's good too.

And distractions - wildly unsuitable food and too much TV.

Eurax - cream and lotion promises to stop itching for upto 10 hours.

There is a minimum recommended age (could be 6!)

Aloe vera gel - it's fabulous. Bought it at our local chemist that does homeopathic stuff - should be able to get it most chemist's though I;d have thought. Much less messy than calamine lotion. and cheap too

Have you any porrdige oats?

place a handful in some mesh like material ie a pair of tights. Then soak it in warm water for a little while. Squeeze it and a creamy paste will come throught the mesh. Put this on the spots. It will stop the itching.
I have also used it on my own eczema when it is very itchy and it soothes almost instantly.

Piriton...depending on age of course.

smartiejake · 10/02/2008 23:30

Another vote for porridge oats- wonderful stuff!

avenanap · 10/02/2008 23:55

antihistamine (the itching is an allergic reaction), try piriton and calomine lotion. I know someone who dosed her kids up with travel sickness medicine. They didn't scratch because they were asleep for a week. Don't try this, it's not very safe to sedate your kids for a week.

pipsqueak · 10/02/2008 23:55

porridge oats ....fab! worked wonders , no itching at all afterwards

BoysAreLikeDogs · 10/02/2008 23:57

Another vote for eurax cream.

Piriton is very good.

E45 cream if you prefer, keep it in the fridge, lovely and cool on hot skin

Good luck

babyinarms · 11/02/2008 10:30

Bicarbonate of soda in bath definately helped....gave bath 2 times a day and plenty of moisturiser, think i used E45 too...good luck.

Thanks so much everyone - it's so hard isn't it. Also is it normal for their temperature to get quite high with the spots?

Yes, they can get a high temp. What worked for us was using lots of the suggestions you've been given, but giving the medicine as soon as the next dose was due rather than waiting for the fever or itching. Also during the worst we bathed them every 3 hours then applied cream. At the very least it kept them occupied and forgot about the itching for a while. And when applying creams 2 people works well, get it on fast.
