How old are they @ghe? Different things could be affecting them and some come at certain times like the 18 month sleep regression.

Ok so can you tell us a bit more about what's going on?

What time does he go to bed? What time is his getting up time and when is he waking in the night?

So his routine is just all over the place but I do try get him to sleep at 8:30 but he seems to be a late sleeper, his mostly getting up around 2am screaming and crying I've tried everything from making a glass of milk to cuddling but he seems to scratch me, just let him cry I don't know what to do I'm so 😰

That does sound difficult. Does he go back to sleep in the end?

What does he do in the daytime?

CraneBoysMysteries · 02/03/2023 18:49

OP is he having night terrors?

Mine has had a few of these and lashed out as you describe. Eyes open but actually not really awake. I just now sit with him on the occasion it happens and cuddle and he usually goes back to sleep. If I wake him up properly it's worse!

Maybe I never thought of that Could be worth looking into, his eyes are always closed to it's really hard because he doesn't talk to

If his eyes stay closed then this could be it. Especially if it's out of character. Mine usually get them when something changes or they're a little anxious about something.

Have a read up on them but in my experience they pass quite quickly if you don't wake them or intervene too much and they just go back to sleep

anotherscroller · 02/03/2023 18:58

There is no scientific evidence to support the idea of “sleep regressions” … babies/toddlers do not regress
so tired of hearing people getting themselves into a state over an idea invented to sell sleep training programmes 🙄🙄

anotherscroller · 02/03/2023 19:00

Sorry that wasn’t helpful.
I agree with PP about nightmares or dreams. When it happens to ours we turn the light on and wake him up, then cuddle him and he goes back to sleep. Not sure if this is the best approach but it upsets us to see him so freaked out and not reachable.

YukoandHiro · 02/03/2023 19:01

Night terrors. Is it like he doesn't recognise you and can't be comforted? DD went through a stage of it at that age

CraneBoysMysteries · 02/03/2023 19:03

@anotherscroller I think it's unfair to pick on a poster who has come to try and help the Op for using a phrase that is widely used in almost every literature about sleep in babies and toddlers

CraneBoysMysteries · 02/03/2023 19:03

Cross post

anotherscroller · 02/03/2023 19:06

Yes I know, sorry

Toddler night sweats, what can I do

Marchforward · 08/04/2023 17:31

Sounds like night terrors. They are more likely to happen when they are ill or over tired. They are quiet scary to witness.

Lifesacircus · 08/04/2023 17:38

Night terrors by the sounds of it.

Both mine went through it.
