Newborn - Nappy changing upset help!

Hi all,

My baby boy is 2 weeks old, ever since day 1 he gets very upset and screams during most nappy changes , unless he is sleeping when i do it. Particularly when i take off his clothes.

I warm his wipes and try to be as quick as possible, is there anything i can try to help him stop this?

Iv tried playing music e.g baby shark and this didn't help at all, i think he's too young to acknowledge it

Hey! Congratulations on your little one!

I'd say this is really normal and you're not doing anything wrong. I used to warm the wipes too (shoved them down my cleavage while I was undoing the poppers etc). Ultimately babies just don't want to be undressed. I found it helpful to play music for myself to help keep me sane through the screaming. It will eventually stop. My LO is now 6 months old and I would say she's enjoyed having her nappy changed since she was around 10 weeks old.

My first baby was exactly the same 9 years ago and DS2 (now 8 weeks) is exactly the same now! I think newborns just don’t like being messed with. He would scream hysterically at every nappy and clothes change, also for the bath. He is much, much better now and has been for the last couple of weeks, it’s only getting undressed for the bath he is unimpressed with now :)

It’s hard hearing them cry but needs must - they have to get changed and they do get used to it after a few weeks. Congratulations on your baby 😊

Completely normal. I can remember feeling exactly the same as you. You soon move onto the next stage,

DragonbornMum · 27/02/2023 21:12

All of a sudden baby is out in the big, scary world and he doesn't know what a nappy is or why Mummy is doing it 8 times a day. All he knows is that there's cold air and cold wipes and strange material being pressed against him.

He will get used to it and stop crying during the changes

have you thought of cotton wool in warm water,
cover lo with a towel so it is not suddenly cold?
congratulations

One of mine was like this too, he was the same with baths and swimming when older and all of them were linked to him not liking being cold! He did grow out of it eventually. How are you warming the wipes? What helped my son was using an electric wipes warmer, I used bamboo velour washable wipes but disposable ones can be used in them too. They are quite hard to find in this country. Another option is to keep a flask of hot water next to the changing station and use cotton wool. But the benefit of using washable wipes is they are much more efficient which makes changing dirty nappies take half the time.

Gently warming a microwave wheat bag and placing it on his chest could help too.

DD was like this at first. I started putting a muslin cloth under her for nappy changes so that her skin wasn't against the cold mat.

MotherOfLunatics · 27/02/2023 21:33

As everyone else has said it's completely normal.
I used black & white pattern flashcards next to the change mat in the early months (probs from around 4/6 weeks). My LO's were absolutely fascinated by them!

TandT2 · 28/02/2023 07:30

I would recommend getting a changing mat with sides that can be set up around hip high so you don't have to bend over. I recommend something like this.

Merrow · 28/02/2023 07:34

Completely normal. I used to use cotton wool with warm water rather than wipes, which helped slightly. But I think the main thing that helped was just getting very very speedy at nappy changes!

Hi OP, congratulations! How about a changing station with a nice mobile over him? We were gifted this one which turns and plays music and has a light...

Obvously PPs are right that he'll get used to it, and putting a nappy under him to stop his butt hitting the cold mat will help, but for ours the mobile was a good thing. Good luck!
